Hi, hoping to get some answers on this.

I'm 21 years old and moved to Melbourne 6 months ago with my mum , sister and step dad. I am on a years working holiday visa because I couldn't get on their visa as I was seen as financially independent ( I was under 21 when this was decided). I have been working in customer service for the past 6 months and have had to leave because of the limitations on the years visa. We are now applying for me to go onto my families visa.

Does anyone know how long this will take and if this will even work? Am I eligible now that I'm 21? Desperately want to stay in Australia!!!

No, they can't add you onto their visa. Their visa isn't even a permanent one, so they will have to apply for that for them to be able to stay. Unfortunately your only option is to fall in love with an Aussie (which isn't THAT easy either) or train for something that Australia wants, hold tight and then apply when you are finally eligible (we are talking years, and a lot of money if you train in Australia).

If you couldn't get on it before, it becomes even less likely that you would get on it now I am afraid. You need to get a visa in your own right in order to stay with your family.

If you weren't eligible when you were under 21 then you're certainly not eligible now you're over 21 and have been working. Dependency means you are completely financially dependant on your parents and in full time education.

Either way, as PB says, you cannot be added to your parents' visa as it's not a PR visa anyway. It's a temporary visa.

If you are desperate to stay in Australia you'll need to either a) find a nice Aussie bloke to marry, b) do 3 months of regional specified work so you can get another year's WHV or c) enroll in full time education here so you can get a skill Australia needs. Option c is expensive, but if you choose to study something that is needed, like engineering or nursing, you may have a better chance of getting a visa on your own when you're done. Are you sure your parents will even be here in another few years? Their visa is a temporary visa and they will either have to apply for PR at some point, get another 457 or go home at the end of the visa validity (usually 4 years)

They're planning on applying for PR in another year. Would that make a difference to me if they have PR?

Full time education isn't an option unfortunately because of the WHV - not able to study for more than 3 months.

Think the only option will be the 3 months regional work and that isn't great as it only buys me another year.

No, them adding you to a PR visa isn't going to happen either. You clearly are not dependant if you have been working and not attending full time education.

You apply for a student visa if you want to go to full time university/TAFE,, not try going on your WHV. You will need to study a full course (3 year degree or 2 year diploma) if you want to apply for a skilled visa on your own.

Only that it leaves you more the odd one out than ever.

Even if the WHV permitted it, going into full time education at this point would not help, you would need to have been in continuous (more or less) full time education to qualify as dependent.

Afraid so. You need to start searching for an Australian beau.
