I'm almost positive I read somewhere that you could have qualifications in one occupation on the MODL or SOL and work experience of 3/4 years or more in an occupation on the MODL or SOL and that was enough to pass the TRA. Now we're nearly ready to make an application I'm starting to doubt myself.
OH has been working as a furniture finisher for nearly 4 years and before that he made acoustic guitars. He has 3 years City & Guilds in Carpentry & Joinery but no qualifications in furniture finishing. Is this a problem?
Any help will be appreciated.

Sorry, don't have the time to answer this personally today. Suggest you retitle the thread so Tony, Alan, or some other kind soul comes along to help out. Critical issue for you, I would have thought, is how you intend to get your visa within the next three years irrespective of skills assessment. Also not clear to me how you're planning to use TRA as your assessing agency if OH is a carpenter or joiner by training.
Cheers,

I'll have a quick run at it and then I'm off to bed - No problem in Principle. Will have to get assessed by VETASSESS as either Carpenter OR Joiner and pass a practical test if invited to after paper assessment of experience and quals as a Carpenter Or Joiner.
Then need to convince DIAC that he has at least 1 year skilled experience, in Furniture Finisher and maybe 3 years in last 4 for 5 or 10 Specific Work Experience (SWE) points. 15 MODL points and 10 in stead of 5 SWE points will depend on DIAC being satisfied that Furniture Finisher is closely related to Carpenter or Joiner (whichever he got assessed as).
so a few issues to get through - the first is the VETASSESS skills process and practical when he has not been working as such for a while.

Any help will be appreciated. If you have any more questions just ask.

Thanks. I'm just a gibbering wreck at the minute. Looks like we're not going to be able to apply as furniture finisher for occupation. The only way now is if my husband gets assessed as a carpenter or joiner, the only problem being that he has worked as a wood machinist/ woodworker for most of the past 15 years and the last 4 he's been making and finishing furniture but has no qualifications in these jobs.
I think it's maybe time to give up - it's just not meant to be.
