I have the opportunity of a short contract in OZ.
Can anyone advise me of the procedure and quickest way to go about getting a
temporary work visa.

Depends on the situation. If a contract under three months and if you're an ETA eligible passport holder, then a business ETA sounds the go, see www.eta.immi.gov.au for details.
