With Australia's largest telecommunications company Telstra recently
announcing they will be slashing up to 12,000 jobs over the next five years
I wouldn't count on picking up a job with any of the other companies here.
I've worked in this industry almost 30 years and I'm worried about my job.

I think the telecommunications industry is in turmoil here right now. With
profit warnings and share prices crashing and seemingly lots of angst
between the Government and the telcos, and the selling of what's left of
public ownership of Telstra and the list seems to go on and on, it's
interesting times right now and worrying for employees.

If you want to go out on your own I'm sure you'd find lots of smallish jobs,
cabling new houses etc but you do need ACMA licence(s). See
http://www.acma.gov.au about licences.

I don't think telecommunications workers are high on the DIMIA list of
skills needed here.

Good luck!!!
