Hey all,
I've received my offer letter from TAFE WA - I intend to study Com. Cookery for 2 years with a view to PR.
I guess now just before I send off all the money I ave one last question about this route to PR
Q Will the Dip in Com. Cookery lead to PR once I have successfully completed the course?
I have researched this option and I guess I'm just a little paranoid -

It's the milliondollar question!! We'r over on a student visa, hubbie just started his cabinet making course last week. We'r also hoping it will lead us to PR. There's a good thread on here starts student medicals, n everythin bout anythin for the student visa route is on there.
The best chance for PR is chosing a course that is on MODL list as it will give more points, but this changes all the time, so it is all a big risk!!
We could have hung back a couple of years n took a diff route but wanted to get over ASAP as we've got v young kids.
The biggest prob over here on a student visa is the 20 hours work thing so its all bout how much money you end up making/spending once here.
Good luck!!
Cheers

Be gentle with me, I'm new around here. I've just been accepted to do Hairdressing in Melbourne, as a VERY mature student so feeling excited about that, but can't lodge visa application until nearer the start time.
As far as the 20 hr work thing is concerned, its a worry for me too. OH is prepared to turn his hand to just about anything and hopes to find an employer that wants him to work full-time. My understanding is that he can apply for a work permit to allow him to work more hours. Can anyone confirm this?

Whilst you are on a student visa your OH can only work 20hrs a week. You can also work 20hrs a week and fulltime during the holidays. If your OH found someone to sponsor him, then he could work full-time. Hope this helps.

hi there i've done alot of research on the student visa and it looks very expensive to take that route. i was going to train as hairdresser over there but have decided to do it here. i found a course that takes about a year to get nvq2. as you will get more points for skill etc you might be able to apply for different visa and get pr. hope that helps

Just a wee point, student visa holder can work 20pw term time and unlimited hours during holidays. Partners over as dependants can only work 20 hours p/w all year round.

Only if he has a job which he would normally be able to be sponsored for in the first place, and if he did then I would assume you wouldn't be considering the costly and long student route. Sorry.

Not sure what this means, can you point me in direction for more info or explain a bit more please? Agent had said it was possible to get permission to work more hours, but not lookin to give him any more cash!! When hubbie enquired bout it at immigration office they said there was no way round it.

A NVQ2 on it's own without work exp is surely useless! ... well, it'll be no good to the TRA anyway!

We had the 20 hour rule in place and visited local DIAC building and when we asked for full working rights the lady laughed ...lol. She honestly thought we was joking!!
When you fill out your student visa application you will sign a declaration to state that you will have enough money to support you and ALL dependants thru the course, you used to HAVE to prove it!
If you don't, then DON'T do it!
We had murders finding part time work, even Macca's won't touch you on a student visa!
Beware!

Then go back to your agent.
