Sponsor in Sydney, Assurer in Melbourne
Hello!
Could anyone please enlighten me.
My Aunt who can sponsor me is in Sydney. Can a distant relative living in Melbourne be my assurer? Do they have to come from the same place?

I don’t think. Assurer can be from anywhere. Only thing that matters is he or she should pass s the income test and should not have more than two adults being assured at the given time.

G'day this Is from the DIMIA website
http://www.immi.gov.au/facts/34aos.htm
Who can give an AoS?
Generally an assurer who provides an AoS should be:
an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New
Zealand citizen over the age of 18;
usually resident in Australia; and
financially able to support the sponsored/nominated person/s and repay
certain welfare payments should they be made to the people covered by
the AoS.
So I would have to say yes, the above page give more detail on the
requirements of an AoS

Rich and Gihan,
Thank you for your replies. I have read form 28. It is true that it does not say that the sponsor and the assurer should come from the same location. I just wanted to make sure that I'm reading it right and that there are no additional requirements that they may have failed to include in the forms and booklet.

It doesn't matter where in Australia the assurer lives.
Read the guidelines in Form 28.
However, with your sponsor in Sydney, you will only be assessed for
Skilled Australian Sponsored, not Skilled Designated Area Sponsored.

If your relative in Melbourne is one who can sponsor in class 139 (ie aunt. uncle, sibling, parent, grandparent, 1st cousin) then you should see if they are wiling to sponsor you.
As per a previous thread, the 139s are processed in likely less than 4 months. Whilst the 138s are processed in around 12 months.

My relative in Melbourne is a second cousin of my father-in-law. In effect she is an Aunt. But we will have difficulty tracing our relationship with her through my husband's great great grandparents as most are already deceased and their birth records are in the province. And besides, I don't think she would qualify as an "Aunt" as meant by the guidelines.
So I would really have to be sponsored by my Aunt, a sister of my father, who is in Sydney and apply as skilled Australian sponsored.
Thanks.

Not as far as Australia is concerned.
'Aunt' is a sister of your mother or father, incl adoptive and step
relatives.
The fact that other cultures have a broader definition is irrelevant.

Thanks Jeremy,
That was what I was thinking. That is why I never thought of asking my relative from Melbourne to be our sponsor.
So it will be Skilled Australian Sponsored for us!
