Default Which specialisation to choose??

Hey guys,

I am just about to lodge a skills assessment with the Australian Computer Society (ACS) however I have 1 major question.

My original degree from back in 2006 was a BSc Hons in Web Development however since graduating I have done more generic roles such as IT support roles which have ranged in complexity over the years.

I would be using the ASCO code of 2231-79 (not elsewhere classified) and am thinking of calling myself a 'ICT Consultant' as this is listed under the nec category.

I simply wonder if my field within IT is specialised enough since I am not a specialist in a set IT technology such as Siebel, Java, SAP etc. Can anyone shed any light on this as to whether I have a chance of scoring a positive assessment with a view of applying for the big 175 visa?

Thank you in advance,

Andrew

From my own experience, ACS can and will reassign the codes if they consider your experience is a closer match to the other one than your original choice. There is no requirement to specialize in any technological aspect either. So long as you are not trying to get a MODL nomination (and you are not as I see), there is no difference what occupation code you are going to end up with, because they are all worth 60 points.

The other thing to think of, is so called "professional level" that your experience should be at. I have read somewhere on the forums, that IT support roles are at risk of deductions from the work experience, if the work went down some pretty much unskilled route - so if you have these periods where you did something of that sort, make sure to have them carefully dated and check if, in your opinion you have enough of work exp. otherwise to cover the 4 years of experience you need (another assumption here is that your degree is equivalent to the aussie one, that should put you into the group A for the experience requirement).

I suggest you talk to a MARA registered agent, specializing in ICT, to have your experience questions cleared up. Good luck with your application
