skilled independent - experience?
My wife and I are hoping to go for skilled emigration, (under my name) I am currently employed in Sales & Marketing Management role and have been employed in this field of work for about 6 years. Therefore am confident I could get 60 points for skill and the 10 points for experience. I am however thinking of re-training to become a primary school teacher – which is again 60 points for skill but I would not have the experience.
I’m unsure whether changing my career at this stage is such a good ideadoes anyone know if I would be eligible for the extra 10 points based on previous job and experience?
Any advice is appreciated
thanks
Ian

If you nominate a 60-point occupation (and get a positive skills assessment for that occupation), you will need to:
1. be employed in any occupation on the SOL for at least 12 months of the 18 months immediately before you apply for migration. This is known as the recent work experience criterion.
2. be employed in your nominated occupation or a closely related occupation for at least 3 out of 4 years immediately before you apply for migration. This is known as the specific work experience criterion for 10 points (only available if your nominated occupation is worth 60 points).
3. be employed in any SOL occupation for at least 3 out of 4 years immediately before you apply for migration. This is the second possibiity under the specific work experience criterion for 5 points. This is applicable if your nominated occupation is worth fewer than 60 points, even if you have worked in your 40- or 50-point occupation.
Point (1) is mandatory, unless you gain exemption (read the Skilled Migration Booklet for more information on such exemptions).
Points (2) and (3) are mutually exclusive, and aren't mandatory (i.e. if you have enough points without either of them, it's fine).

Hi Ian. If I were you I would use existing skills and experience to try and
get the PR Visa.
Once you are in Australia you can retrain to become a primary school
teacher.
Added advantage would be that you'll do the retraining in Australia.

Hi Ian,
It's worth exploring your eligibility for assessment by AIM before you get
too confident about getting a skills assessment as a sales and marketing
manager. Barbara Kerabrum there is always happy to field enquiries. As, of
course, are a number of professional migration agents...
Cheers

skilled independent - experience?
Thanks for the advice, do you know if I apply for assessment with AIMS for 60 points and they consider me not worthy – do they allocate 50 points etc or do you need to send off once again and therefore pay again for the assessment?
Thanks
Ian

Re: skilled independent - experience?
Ian,
George is quite right - don't underestimate the difficulty in obtaining a skills assessment from the AIM.
In referring to a 50 point occupation I imagine you are referring to the occupation Marketing Specialist. This is assessed by a different assessing body (VETASSESS), and as such would necessitate a separate application and another fee.
Note that you will need a degree qualification to obtain a skills assessment from VETASSESS: no degree => no positive skills assessment from VETASSESS.
If you anticipate attaining the desired visa outcome applying via VETASSESS I would recommend that strategy rather than applying via AIM. However, in most cases one needs to look at a family sponsored skilled visa application if you are looking at a 50 point occupation.
Best regards.
