Default skilled employment experience

Hi everyone,
I am struggling to meet the points requirements of skillselect. I finished my apprenticeship and carried on in the trade for about 18 months for several different companies until i went on a working holiday. Once i returned there was absolutely no employment (2009), so i have been self employed up to date.

This is where i need your input as to what i may be able to claim points for. Obviously starting out i had no money or help so what i have been earning has gone back in and my tax returns have reflected this. I have been told that because of the low income i cannot claim points for my self employed experience.

If anyone can point me in the right direction or shed any light on the subject it would be greatly appreciated.

PS i shall be doing the ielts exam to gain more points.
Thanks Jamie
