We will be going to NZ in Sept 2002 and want to take our labrador with us. Can anyone give
a personal recommendation of a pet shipping company? I've done the usual research but
can't decide which is the best. Thanks Carol

Hello Carol,
don't us a shipping company, you can do everything yourself for a fraction of the cost and
most likely much better then a shipping company.
Talk to your airline with regards to the transport, the dog can be shipped on the same
flight that you are taking.
You will need to get the quarantine booked in NZ before you leave. Have a look at this
page http://www.maf.govt.nz/AnimalIHS/ for the requirements.
If you have any further questions, please contact me, I might be able to help.

Hi Sabine Thanks for your reply and for your offer of further advice. We had never thought
of shipping Mutley, (our black lab), ourselves. I must admit the idea of saving the cost
of pet shipping companies is very appealing as I will be studying in NZ so every penny
will count! My husband intends to travel first to buy a car and find rented accomodation
and I and the children will follow a few weeks later, so perhaps she could travel with us.
I believe that if we have an address in NZ that she can go to on arrival she can do the 30
days quarantine there? Do you know if I have read that correctly? I will go through the
maf site again as you suggest. Thanks again for the help. Carol

Hi Carol,
your dog will have to stay in the quarantine kennels for the 30 days as far as I know.
This will cost a bit of money but you can make up by organizing the transport yourself.
You will have to start 6 month before you are planning to leave and have the vet do the
blood work on your dog. Before you book you flight contact the airline and get then cost
for your dog as well. You might find that some tickets for you are cheap but the cost for
the dog is higher.
Get as much info as possible on prices and conditions from all the airlines in question.
Where are you from?

Good for you, I now find out that conditions are different when you come from the UK.
Let me know how things go for you
