Right Time to Ship Possessions ?
If after receiving a PR visa I went out to OZ to look for work and a house etc, would
you advise shipping out non essential personal possessions straight away or wait
until you are more settled in OZ. Would there be any tax implications of shipping
them out later ?

What kinds of possessions? I've moved stuff via shipping or economy air and
have never had to pay tax on them as they were personal goods (books, papers,
clothes etc.).

Re: Right Time to Ship Possessions ?
What I was thinking was if I went to Australia for a couple of years as a kind of
trial and at the end of this period either decide to stay in OZ or return to the UK.
I would'nt want to ship out everything I own until I was 100% sure I was staying. It
would also make it easier to move around Australia looking for work/best place to
live etc. So if after two years I was happy with my life in Australia and more
settled, could I then ship out more personal possessions without getting charged
import tax or equivalent on them ? The majority of my CDs, books, videos, cycles and
musical instruments I could live without for a while.

Good idea. There aren't many places I wouldn't test out first. It'll give you a good
idea of the job market and cost of living too.

Yep, sounds good. When I went to live overseas I took a backpack and a suitcase,
stuffed full. I then had a box of clothes and additional stuff sent via economy
air (3 weeks). That was plenty of stuff for a 1-2 year stay. The thing is too, if
you are earning money here, you'll probably start accumulating your own new stuff
here as well.

Well I had my box of stuff shipped to Japan (not to Australia), but none of it was
taxed. I doubt you'd be taxed on any of it, though they might be dubious of very new
items. If you're just packing the stuff you said above, I really don't think they
would bother about it. To be sure, maybe you should write an email to Customs and
check it out: http://www.customs.gov.au/ or [email protected] or call +61 2
6275 6666 and ask them.

Re: Right Time to Ship Possessions ?
Dave,
Serious point to consider.
My expereince is that UK is one of the more expensive places on earth to store possesions (unless you have helpful relations).
You mention shipping the rest of your stuff after a couple of years. Suggest you see how much a few years storage would cost in UK PLUS insurance and compare that to the cost of shipping to Aus. Heck you may even want to store in Aus.
I don't have any facts but gut feel tells me you may be pleasantly suprised.
I'd be interested in what figures you get.
