Default residents return visa

Hello could anyone help me.
What is a residents return visa?
My father in law lived in oz for 5 years but never got round to getting a citizenships.
How can he get back in oz and live with us.
We are the only family he has now.

It would be helpful if anyone can help.

Thank you

Ann Marie

RRVs are explained on form 968i:
http://www.immi.gov.au/allforms/pdf/968i.pdf

If a former PR left Australia many years ago then unless special circumstances apply it's unlikely an RRV will be granted.

The Contributory Parent visa may be the only way. If you can show he's dependent (difficult) then Aged Dependent Relative may be an option eventually.

He should get professional advice to see if there is any hope of an RRV, or to see if the other options might work.
