Default Relocating to Australia as a Childrens Nurse with my 3yr old.

Hi I am currently in the process of completing my Children’s Nursing degree. Once I am qualified I would love to relocate to raise my daughter in a much better place than the UK. I don’t know where to start, what to do to just look at getting the wheels in motion so it’s all ready for when I have qualified. Is it best using an immigration officer or one of those relocation packages ive seen on the internet?

A relocation package won't be any good until you have secured a visa.
Two usual ways that nurses secure visas, either sponsored by an employer (eg 482 visa), or as a skilled independent migrant (eg 189 visa) - which means you are not tied to one employer.
A chat with a registered migration agent would be useful to give you an idea of what you can work towards, there are several who post on here, such as Paul Hand. (AN immigration officer works for the Aus government and just deals with processing, not with advice)
A good read of the official immigration website is also a good place to start. https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visa...sa/visa-finder

And without wishing to pry into your personal life, you will need to sort out permission to remove your daughter from the UK. This generally involves getting permission from the child's father.

Pollyana So to start you advise to look at Visa’s and speak to an immigration officer?

Im pretty sure my ex will be ok with it all as it is to provide a better upbringing and life for our daughter.

Im sure when I briefly looked at relocation packages it mentioned about help with visa’s?

Also how would I know where to look at going? There are so many beautiful places. I know of a friend in Perth and a friend in Adelaide, are these good places to look at?

Not an immigration officer but a Migration Agent - https://www.mara.gov.au/

Even if your ex agrees with the move, how are you planning to manage single parenting with no support network? Childcare is not cheap by all accounts, and childcare subsidies are not available to those on temporary work visas (which a 482 would be). Childcare may also not align with shiftwork.

Where you go usually depends on which states you can get into, which states there is work in, which states you can afford to live in, and maybe weather / climate / etc.

old.sparkles By the time I can move my daughter will be maybe 6/7 years old, so if school age, would should be entitled to go to public school? And I was looking into Child family Nurse, I think that’s what it is called so if the same as he it would be more sociable none shift work. I’ve only just started looking into it so I’ve no idea where to start or what to do. I’m hoping I can make this possible for a better future for us both.

Np, as I said you should speak to a registered migration agent - someone like Paul Hand, who uses this forum, An immigration officer works for the government and just does the processing, you can't, and shouldn't try, to talk to them!

To get a relocation package you would be taking a sponsored visa, probably a 482, so you would need t find a sponsoring Health Board or Department, if they are sponsoring they would help to some extent but you really should also speak to your own agent as well as dealing with them, to ensure you are getting a good deal. They own agent will be looking after the employer's interests rather than theirs. And relocation packages these days are hard to find, even for high paying jobs.. Ig you go on a sponsored visa you are tied to that employer, if you part company you only have a short time to find a new sponsor or you have to leave. To stay permanently you would need to qualify for a permanent visa in the end - this is why a chat with a registered migration agent would be useful.

You would need some kind of court agreement to remove your daughter, even if he agrees (which would at east make it easier) - again a migration agent can help and if you go through old threads on here you'll see what other people have had to do.

Please be careful of the "better life" trap. Yes it works for many families, but not for all of them. Old sparkles has already touched on the difficulty of childcare with no support from family and friends. Even if you work "school hours" you still have school holidays, inset days, days when your child is sick. It will almost certainly be harder than you expect - I'm really not trying to put you off, I just don't want you to have rose-tinted-specs about the move!
If you are on a temp sponsored visa like the 482 you may be up for school fees, depending on which State you go to.

The climate varies a lot across the country so wherever you choose - or wherever your prospective employer is based - do some good research, look at associated risks like flood zones (esp in Queensland) and bushfire risks (almost everywhere nowadays).

And lastly - migrating nowadays is expensive. Visa costs, skills assessments, English tests, medicals, police checks, flights, shipping, rent (very hard to get in many places and very $xxx), car purchase, set up costs for a new home, phone contract, school uniform etc etc - most people now say you need a good £25,000 - £30,000 behind you.

Do some reading through old threads on here, read the website I linked to above, in detail, and chat to an agent. That'll all help a lot.

Good luck

Pollyana So a relocation doesn’t help with the cost of moving, visas etc? Thanks for your help. I’ve realised it is going to be hard, I initially thought been a registered nurse it would be an easy move as my friend in Adelaide said they are crying out for nurses and how great it is in Australia (she is Australian Birm and raised). I will continue to look into all as I’ve still 2-3 years of University left.

Given your age, and lack of experience, I'm not sure you would meet the points test for a skilled visa. On a temporary visa you may need to pay for schooling.

Schools run 4 terms per year. Where I am, the school day is around 8.45 am to 3pm - outside of those hours you will likely need Out Of School Hours Care (OOSH / OSHC ). Some schools offer this, but not all - and obviously also comes at a cost.

I did look for Child Family Nurse jobs, but not entirely sure what that would be (nursing generally not my area). General paediatric nurses salary near me seems to be in the range $85k to $110k. Not sure that will be high enough to cover cost of living here as single parent

Mmmm thats not a lot these days as a single parent, is it. Especially if on a temp visa, with schooling, health insurance, no State help for childcare etc. And little chance of extra hours with a kiddy to care for.

ClareMarie, a relocation package these days that pays for the visas, the move etc is very unusual and I'd be surprised if you got offered ne for your kind of role. Years ago yes it was possible, but the financial squeeze has stopped most of this kind of help. I knew a lot of nurses who migrated initially on sponsored visas 10-15 years ago and even then they didn't get any financial help. Departments now know that if people really want to move, they will pay for it themselves. And even if you did get some help, you would still need a lot of cash behind you as a package would not include al the little things you need to set up a new life.

Nether Sparkles nor I are trying to put you off, but this is an expensive long road these days, and you need to look at it from the start with your eyes open. Please have a brose through forum threads, especially over the post-covid years, and try and have a consultation with a registered agent to see how feasible your plan really is. Even once you are qualified you may need some work experience behind you before you qualify for a visa, and none of us know if or when Immigration may move the goalposts.
