Default Regulations for student visa?

Hi all,
I'm posting on behalf of a friend who doesn't have the internet hoping someone can give her an idea of what a student visa involves. She has done a plumbing qualification but hasn't enough work experience to back it up for a skilled visa. We were wondering if a student visa would be an option. How do we find out which courses are available and are there any restrictions we need to know about? She has just turned 45 so is this too old? The plus side is that there is only her to support so she could manage financially for a while.
Any info would be gratefully received.

She is too old to get perminent residency after the course, you have to be under 45. This applies to the skilled visas too, so even if she had enough work experiance she is too old.

If she just fancied it to live here for a couple of years (which can be very hard when you then HAVE to go home) then she can only work 20 hours a week.

Thanks for that - I was presuming that age would be a factor but thought it was worth a try! Ah well, she'll have to hope they change the age limit in the next year or 2!
