Quick Q re: bridging visa class for onshore applicant
If you apply for a spouse visa while in australia and are granted a bridging visa when spouse application is lodged, what class of bridging visa are you granted a, b, c, d, or e ?

And one of the most important requirements for a BVA is that you are lawful on the date of making the application.
Let your existing visa expire first and you'll not only get a BV-C (a much less beneficial visa) but special rules usually allow DIMIA to refuse your application even if you meet all the normal criteria.

Don't expect them to grant the visa the same day. You will likely need to use your bridging visa.
Remember the bridging visa has the exact same conditions as the visa you are on (although you may be able to apply for permission to work). Also - if you need to leave Australia for any reason you must apply for and obtain a Bridging Visa B and abide fully by its terms.
