questions upon landing to oz
Hello mates,
I can't think what would be my life in oz. Could anybody tell me what are the first things to do upon landing in oz? How bout on jobs? familiarization of the place? cost of living? cheapest place to live in? and others..
I'm planning to be in melbourne this March. Could anyone give me a light on this. Or any links to read and familiarize the place..
Thanks,
volt

Hi Volt,
I will relocate to Melbourne on June/July. The very first thing for me
is the temporary accommodation booking and house searching.
I employed a relocation agent to help me. This is the website for the
agent www.hrrelocations.com
They also have a free e-book which is very specific to Melbourne and
quite useful. Furthermore, they have a full version for AUD 30.

Re: questions upon landing to oz
Other than accommodation, you need to open a bank account (you need to
meet the 100 points requirements, which passport itself is not enough,
but exemption will be given for those who "newly arrived residents").
You also need to apply for Tax File Number (TFN) with Australian
Taxation Office (ATO). Without TFN, many employers would not want to
employ you.
Plenty of info on the DIMIA website... you just need to dig deep for
the info.

The "100 points requirements" is vague for me. Is it the completeness of my requirements before I could apply?
What are the requirements for TFN? This is one of the important thing to accomplish first I think..
I have asked some of the migrants already and I have take note on all their advices. Sometimes their situation with mine are different that's why the best thing to do is to get all the information. And I thank you all for the spare time you have handed me.

Re: questions upon landing to oz
Hi Volt,
You need only your passport to open an bank account for you as long as
you do it within the first week of your arrival. I did it last year
during the trip to validate my visa.
For the Tax File Number (TFN), you can get one from ATO if you are a PR
of Australia. After you have TFN, you can register for Medicare.

How much would I prepare for the opening of account for the bank? I'm planning to have 3,500 A$ cash on hand and the rest will be deposited to the bank. Do you have any link to surf for the familiarization of places in Melbourne.
Thanks,

Re: questions upon landing to oz
Volt,
My friends in Melbourne suggested me to open an account in WestPac
Bank. I did it last year and the minimum deposit amount is A$500.
For the information about Melbourne, I really suggest you to get the
free ebook from my relocation agent. This free ebook give you a good
introduction to the place and have some hyperlinks.
