Professional licensing/registration - Engineers
#1
I understand that in some states, Queensland is one of them, that mechanical engineers are required to be registered.
Is this something that will need to be done prior to visa application, or is it something that my husband can do once we have the visa and we're in the process of moving over? Should he have done this before having his skills assessment submitted?
The Board of Professional Engineers of Queensland website is not working at the moment. Can anyone tell me what is required for registration?
If this is better in a different forum, please feel free to move it.

Sorry, Santa M - I didn't see your message.
I think you've misunderstood my question though - I know that my husband needs his skills assessed, and he's in the process of having that done by Engineers Australia just now.
It's just that I've read about professional engineers needing to have a professional registration with the Board of Professional Engineers of Queensland to be able to practice as an engineer in QLD. Does anyone know more about this? This is something he does after we get the visa right?

Yes, you are on the right track. I think this will more than answer your question ......
For your visa you need your qualifications and skills assessed by a national body -- in your case, Engineers Australia.
For your practice as an engineer in Queensland your husband will need to be registered -- if he has five or more years experience as an engineer.
There are some exceptions to this rule if the engineer is employed under the supervision of another registered engineer. However, being registered would make your husband a more attractive job applicant and he would be in a better position to find and choose the job he wants!!
Anyway, I just found a more comprehensive explanation --
RPEQ stands for Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland. Persons with a bachelor of engineering from an Australian University (or another qualification that is recognised by Engineers Australia) and have at least five years experience as a professional engineer are eligible to apply for registration. An engineer may be registered in one or more prescribed divisions of practice. It is a legal requirement for professional engineers to register with the Board before they can practise as a professional engineer in Queensland. That is, you must be a Registered Professional Engineer of
Queensland (RPEQ). The rule applies to all persons who in their employment provide an engineering service to their employer. Currently, the exception is for persons who practise under the supervision of RPEQs. However, initial
proposed amendments to the Queensland Professional Engineers Act 2002 were to remove this provision making it mandatory for all engineers practising in Queensland to be registered. Subsequent discussions between the BPEQ and the Queensland Government have resulted in this amendment to the Act being withdrawn; although a more prescriptive definition of ‘supervision’ is to be applied under the Code of Practice (see Status Update p.2).
Companies will still need to ensure that persons employed as professional engineers are registered or work under the supervision of a registered professional engineer as per the updated definition. This requirement
applies regardless of whether the professional engineer in providing professional engineering services to his or her employer or to external clients

Great. Thanks Lady Jane. It looks like it can wait until after visa grant then. Does anyone know the specifics of how to be registered? Is it relatively straightforward?
