Does anyone know the process for taking pets into Australia? I know that they have
to be quarantined for a period of time, has anyone experienced this and what was
it like, what is the latest legislation on this etc. I look forward to your
responses. TCook

This site will tell you everything you want to know. www.aqis.gov.au My G/F was going
to bring her cats from Europe a few years ago but because of their age,the expense
and the fact that they didn't travel well, we decided against bringing them out to
Aust. Travis B.

Good luck Todd

Any of you got experience of immigrating to NZ with pets?

We are planning to take our 2 dogs with us from the UK when we do the move
this summer.

Any answers to the following and general tips, do's and don't's etc gratefully
received! Thanks Jonathan

1. Do the dogs have to stay in the container for the whole journey? i.e. if we fly
via singapore do they get a chance to be let out?

1a. Does the 30 day post import period have to be at one specific address for the
whole 30 days? (we were planning to travel upon arrival)

1b. Does this 30 period mean they have to stay in the house for the 30 days and
not go out?!

Thanks in advance.

Hi jonathan,

    >

AFAIK they have to stay in theie boxes until you pick'em up at the final destinations
customs office. The boxes will be sealed at departure by an airport authority and
this seald mst not be broken until the boxes reached their final destination.

    >
    >

There are only a few places where the quarantine can be "done". The pets will stay
there for the whole period (min. 30 days).

    >
    >

Yes. It's a "locked" area.

It looks like you think you can do the quarantine at your house but sorrowly I have
to tell you that - after all my personal researches - the poor pets have to stay at
the quarantine office the whole time. You'll be allowed to take them home after
they've proven not to be any danger to OZ.

All information is based on my research about taking our pets from DE to AU which is
still to be done. You can get further information about importing pets (incl. a
special guide[1] on importing cats and dogs) at the AGRICULTURE, FISHERIES AND
FORESTRY[2] - Quarantine & Inspection[3]

Hi Jonathan. We're in the same boat here! We're not going anywhere without the
collie )

You'll find this helpful:
http://www.maf.govt.nz/biosecurity/i...omaniic.uk.htm

It explains about container rules etc.

We were also planning to travel on arrival, but the forms indicate that you have to
give your 30-day address before you go, so I interpret that to mean you've really got
to book somewhere in advance and stick to it. We decided to turn that into an
advantage, and spend our first 30 days being urbanites, buying a vehicle, some maps
and guides and whatever we couldn't carry over in our cases.

I also assume that the dogs would have to stay on the property, ie in the
house/garden, for the 30 days, but haven't checked yet.

Hope that helps a little; let us know if you find out more?

Oh - where are you moving from/to, and what dogs have you? We're going from scottish
highlands to south island (south/west), and have just the one border collie.

Good luck.... Winnie xx

No. The cage is sealed with a Government approved seal before departure and must
arrive with the seal intact.

Udo, I think you're getting a little confused (easily done I know!) as the question
relates to NZ not Australia; the rules are slightly different. Dogs coming from the
UK to NZ can be kept in quarantine at home, which is much more humane.

Hi Winnie,

Ooops. Yeah, right. Sorry for mixing that up and maybe scaring some people. Oz should
think about adopting the NZ way. I'd appreciate that in the future And thanks for
pointing that out!

Cheers,
Udo

Hi Udo. I agree; Australia should have kinder quarantine laws. We might have applied
to Tasmania if they had...

Hi Winnie,

    >
    >

How are the modalities for importing a cat/dog from NZ to OZ? What about first
bringing the pets to NZ for a month and then move along to OZ? Do I need more than a
tourist visa for NZ to import a pet? Anyone knows something about it?

Cheers,
Udo

Hi thanks for all your info and answers

It does sound like oz has stricter rules than NZ!

I have been speaking to a very helpful contact at NZ MAF and the answers are, that
the 30 day address can change as many times as you like and that during this 30 days
the dogs can go out of the address and do walks etc. - so thats good news.

Cath - good luck with your move! We are taking to small allsorts breeds from near
Manchester, aiming to settle somewhere near Napier or Gisborne that sort of area.
But we are planning to buy an RV and travel for the first few months in NZ. When are
you going?

Cheers Jonathan

Hooray, that's good news about the address change - and the walks! I had visions of a
border collie bouncing off the walls by the end of a month >

So that means we can plan to rent a house in town for one or two weeks when we
get there, and then spend the rest of the 30 days somewhere quieter. Excellent,
thank you.

Jonathan - it's Winnie that is immigrating. I've had 3 international moves in the
last 9 years and I don't fancy doing another!

Winnie - what are your plans re timing and areas etc.

Sounds like you're planning a similar idea to us i.e. travelling upon arrival.

Hi Jonathan. We should be submitting our application within the next couple of weeks,
and then it's up to NZIS - we'll go as soon as (and if!) they say we can.

The plan was to travel round for a while, to see which areas we like, and hopefully
meet some locals, but it will definitely be South Island, and probably south/central
or west. Once we've chosen an area we'll rent a house, and look for some land to buy.

And our border collie is coming with us )

What about you?

Winnie xx
