The suburbs along the rivers are the nicest - Swan and Canning Rivers.
Suburbs like: Bicton, Attadale, Alfred Cove, Ardross, Booragoon, Mt.
Pleasant, Rossmoyne, Como, Manning, etc. Also, Murdoch further south, home
of the Murdoch Uni is nice as well as some of the suburbs near it.
The south is a mix of everything: naval base, heavy industry, marshalling
yards, rural, residential, airports, etc. You have to head much further
south, past Rockingham, where you get into some very nice places to live,
especially near the coast. With the expansion of the train route south to
Rockingham and Mandurah, things should improve for most suburbs along it.
Stay away from anything east of the Naval Base and Kwinana (heavy industry
area), like Leda, Calista, Medina, Orelia, Parmelia, Hope Valley.
Northeast of that, Thornlie and Maddington are iffy.
Close to the coast, south of the river (SOR) are some so-so areas: namely
Hilton and surrounding burbs like Hamilton Hill, Samson, Coolbellup to some
extent, etc. Hilton had some pretty bad crime problems recently and had to
open a Cop Shop 24/7 to deal with it.
Good luck,
Helena

Hi Cs Lo
If you do a search under Perth you will find tons of stuff as us Perthites (all who are in the process of going there) like to chat so there's heaps of info available. Do ignore Pommiebastard as most of his postings are part of a personal mission to discuorage even the most committed of us to turn back and stay in the UK.
It is a wonderful country though havent much knowledge of Perth (as havent been since i was 12).
Good luck
Happy hunting

Re: Perth !! what you think ??
I have stayed in Melbourne for two years, seen lots of Adelaide and now live in Perth. Number one is Perth, the weather is great and it is not a huge big city, much less traffic.
There is always a 'but' and it is only that I rate Perth second behind Belfast. Loved Belfast and I recon nothing will beat it.
Give Perth a go, I think it is difficult to not love it!!!!

I think one thing you should consider is that Perth is practically
closer to Africa than Sydney. It's really alone out there and you'll
have to fly to get to the other (Australian) urban centers. Why would
you want to go to Perth?

"closer" in what way ?. Surely not in terms of distance, 'cos
Africa's some 3 times further away.
