Default Period of work experience

I was wondering if someone could provide me with a bit of advice. I have been asked by my case officer to provide additional references for my work experience, specifically the last 6 months leading up to the application. My occupation is web developer (2231-17) but the problem, I think, is that I'm mostly self-employed and when not working on paid contracts I often developed tools for future use.

I have full time work references from 2002 until sept 2005 and my application date was late feb 2006. I have obtained an additional reference letter showing another 2 months of work. I understood the work experience requirement at the time of application was 12 of the past 18 months in your nominated occupation, which I believe was covered by my original work references.

My query is that if the additional reference isn't sufficient, should I obtain a statutory declaration explaining my situation (being freelance) and print out some files or directory lists showing work done within the timeframe?

thanks!
