Penal Clerance Certificate - same as a CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) check??
Hi
I have had to have a CRB check as part of my job requirement which means your whole history is checked for criminal activity by a government agency- you gain a certificate for clearance. If I have had this done do I also need to get a penal clearance certificate - surely it is one and the same thing?

No, they aren't the same.
A CRB check is for employment purposes, and is done by a private company, with details supplied to your employer as well as yourself. It is done under employment and child protection legislation.
For immigration purposes you need a Subject Access check - this is done by the police, and is supplied directly to you, under the auspices of the Data Protection Act.
DIMIA will not accept a CRB check.
To get the Subject access check, you need to contact your local police HQ - or visit their website - and get hold of the Data Protection office. Each force has a different form, and has differing id requirements - if you have any problems, or don't know which force to contact, let me know.
