Default Passports/visas to travel to UK for holiday

I'm sure this is probably asked elsewhere but I can't find it on here so sorry for asking again if it has been and can't really understand the government websites.

I am British but got Aus citizenship about 10 years ago. I used to have an Aus passport but it recently expired. As I'm wanting to move back to England I got a UK passport rather than reapplying for Aus one.

I am wanting to go back to the UK for a holiday in a few months and my Auntie has told me that visa rules have changed since Brexit and I won't be able to leave Aus, enter the UK for the holiday and then return to Aus all on my UK passport. Is this correct? In the past I've gone on holiday to the UK all on my Aus passport and many years ago did it all on the UK passport. My Auntie is known for being 'creative with the truth' at times and I'm not sure if this is one of those occasions or if she's actual correct this time!

You will be able to enter the Uk with no issue, or need for visa, on the British passport.

You need to renew your Aus passport to leave and return to Australia

And Brexit has nothing to do with it

old.sparkles is 100% correct, and Brexit is irrelevant!

Years ago, you would have held an Aussie visa, and so would have travelled on that, with your UK passport.
When you became an Aus citizen and got an Aussie passport, you would have travelled on that, and been admitted to the UK as an Aussie tourist.

Nowadays, you show your UK passport at check in, so they know you will be allowed in to the UK
Use you Aussie passport to leave Australia through Immigration
Use your UK passport to enter the UK

Use your Aus passport to check in for the return flight, in the UK, so they can see you have the right to enter Australia
Use your UK passport to leave through UK Immigration
Use your Aus passport to enter Australia

Enjoy your trip

Agreed with all above, including "nothing to do with Brexit" - the UK is just a bit late to the "you must use a local passport if you're a citizen" party, following in the footsteps of the US, which has been that way for many years (always?), Australia, and Canada.

Thanks for confirming this. I did wonder what Brexit would have to do with it. lol
So I'm going to have to get an Australian passport again? I was trying to save money and just have the one!

Yes, if you are planning on leaving Aus and returning, you will need an Aussie passport, sorry

(you can have mine if you like, its currently under the wobbly leg of a coffee table, excellent use for it! )

I am in a similar situation in planning for a UK visit next year but having British passport - expired and current Australian passport.
I do have a UK birth certificate would this be sufficient to waive any visa fees for the UK?

It is widely reported that you can get into the UK with a (recently) expired British passport.

Another question is whether the airline will allow you on the plane without an ETA for your Australian passport? Personally I wouldn't risk it. .... As a British citizen, you're not eligible for an ETA, but I assume you know that.

And I question I have is: if you're not flying until next year, and can afford a ticket to the UK, why wouldn't you just renew your British passport?

A relative advised they will pay towards my flights to get me over there for a family event. I am trying to avoid any unnessecary costs where possible.
