Default a passport expiry question

my husband has 2 years tomorrow left on his passport, so i am wondering is this long enough, we send our visa application off this week, or would it be safer just to get a new one.
although i have no intention of returning to britain, if something unforseen happened and we had to come back before becoming citizens we would need passport to return. is it easy enough to renew uk passport from australia, what do other people do?
any advice gratefully received
donna
