Obtaining an AUS drivers license
Is it possible to take the tests for an Aus drivers license while on holiday
there and not having a permanent address in Australia?
From a few posts here it seems that way to me. If so, it would be great to
do it while on a PR-visa validating trip, thus making it easier to obtain
bank accounts, etc. immediately after moving to Aus.
Which states have the quickest and easiest procedures for converting a
foreign license to an Australian?

You need to have an address in the relevant state and be 'living'
there. Of course, that could just involve staying with friends.
You may not have to do a practical test - it depends on which state
you are going to and which country issued your current licence.
In NSW at least, your current licence will not be removed but rather
endorsed to make it invalid in Australia when a NSW licence is issued.

You can open bank accounts with just your passport for up to 6 weeks
after arriving in Australia.
There's no reason why a foreign drivers licence shouldn't be
acceptable even if you are caught by the '100 point' system

There's a national scheme being rolled out to accept licences from
certain countries as not requiring a re-run of the practical test.
Most of Western Europe is covered by this.
So far this scheme has been implemented in NSW, Vic, QLD and WA. Not
sure about the other states/territories.

Re: Obtaining an AUS drivers license
Be warned that (in NSW at least) if you fail the test, the facility to drive
on your foreign license while in Australia is immediately withdrawn. You
could become stranded at the test centre!
