Why would it concern you? Don't you plan to live here for the rest of
your life? Two more years passes in a blink.

It is a government bill, and will almost certainly pass. However it is
possible some provisions will change in the select committee process. You
could make a submission if you think that the 5 years residency
requirement is too long.

OTOH if you want to be a citizen then it would probably be a good idea to
spell the name of the governing party correctly. :)

On the first plane to Australia, perhaps? A family of a friend of mine
did that. Get NZ Cit, get the passports, and off to Aussie to live.

I find that to be really cynical behavior. I took Citizenship because
I love this country and want to be a part of it for the rest of my
life.

Moving to Ozy doesn't mean they don't love this country.
Hard to find the job that could create better future for the families here!
The price of house is raising up, tax income is too high and the kids still
have a lot of needs.

I met many kiwi who were born in New Zealand and for generations been in NZ,
at last they decided move to Ozy!

So, just hope one day NZ becomes a part of Ozy confederations.

Another one using NZ as a backdoor into Australia no doubt.

It is cynical and despicable but then so are the people who do it. In many
cases they come from countries and from backgrounds where corruption and
cynicism are just a normal part of everyday life.

The period of evaluation would be increased to five years - with the person
being required to live in NZ for 1350 days (3.69 years) and no less than
240 days in EACH of the 5 years.

This would be because so many people who get NZ citizenship book their
one-way flights to Australia very soon after.

The Aussies are getting VERY annoyed that New Zealand is providing a "back
door" to people who wish to immigrate to Australia....but don't qualify. So
they get NZ citizenship....and move to Australia anyway.

Extract:

The Bill increases the standard period of residence in New Zealand that
grant applicants must meet from three years to a minimum of 1 350 days
during the five years immediately preceding application (approximately 75%
of the period), including a minimum of 240 days in New Zealand
(approximately eight months) in each of the five years. This will provide a
sufficient basis for assessments of applicants' suitability for
citizenship.

It probably represents an huge delay in the plans to move to Sydney.

I agree with you 100% on this one, Bobs.

NZ as back door to Australia is a big problem - for NZ and Australia.

Same here. I've lived in NZ for almost 22 years and been an NZ citizen for
17 years.

But I know of a large number of people from the Indian subcontinent and east
Asia who regard NZ as Australia's unguarded back door.

All they have to do is borrow NZ$1 million via some tortured contract that
technically isn't a loan.....and PRESTO they are business investors!

Three years later, they are NZ citizens, pay the money back - with interest
- and move to Australia.

He used the Australian spelling. He gave the game away on that one.

It'll probably pass. I have no problem with that.
My question is - will this provision apply retrospectively, i.e. to those
who are already here and have residency. The reason I ask is I know
someone here who has already been here a bit over two years, and is
wanting to sponsor his one remaining relative. He cannot do this until
he is a citizen... and it would seem a bit unfair for him to have stayed
here *almost* three years - and then have to wait an extra two years to
get his citizenship because he missed out by a couple of months :-(

Aussie has apparently been plagued by people who gain NZ citizenship, who
were rejected by aussie immigration, and then arrive in Aussie to live.
