They don't pay welfare benefits for the first 2 years, but there are
some payments like Family Tax Benefit (roughly the equivalent of the
UK childrens allowance) that are not covered by this restriction.

Default New immigrants too would get good social security amount !!!!

I am a new immigrant to Australia and my family consists of me , my
wife ,a boy aged 7 and a girl aged 4.

Happy to get P.R Visa and a little worried looking at some of the
posts about job market.

However, to help families there are three easy-to-understand payments
which ,as I understand, are available to even new immigrants. The
payments are under:
• Family Tax Benefit Part A—helps families with the cost
of raising children;
• Family Tax Benefit Part B—gives extra help to families
with one main income, including sole parents;
• Child Care Benefit—helps families with child care costs.

When I calculate myself for my family I would get the social payments
as below:

1.As I would estimate my annual income would be less than $30806 ,
from Family Tax Benefit Part A I can get for 2 Children @ $126.70 per
child for fortnight a total amount of $253.40 fortnightly.

2.Rent Assistance : As I would be eligible for Family Tax Benefit Part
A at more than the base rate and would be paying private rent of not
less than $307.39 per fortnight I would be eligible for rent
assistance of $109.48 per a fortnight.

3. Family Tax Benefit Part B which gives extra assistance to families
with one main income will help me as my wife would not be earning
and the youngest child is less than 5 years I would be eligible for
an amount $108.78 per a fortnight.

4. Child care benefit : Whatever payment eligible goes to approved or
registered child care centre and I would not get anything.

When I add up all the eligible payments I would get
$(253.40+109.48+108.78) coming to $471.66 a fortnight and $ 943.32
monthly. Really a big amount when you are struggling for finding a
job. Is it not?

This posting is made to shed some light to the new immigrants and get
views of the parents who are in receipt of the payments. I welcome
corrections in my assumptions and calculations. Did I leave any
eligible payments or did I consider the ones which we are not
eligible?

It is possible that you would be eligible for these payments. Even so,
these amounts won't go very far, especially in Sydney or Melbourne.

You should plan on having independent funds to see you through
for the first few months, particularly if you are in IT.

Good luck!

Carlos.

Exactly. Also, you should have independent funds for the simple fact of it's
not a good look to be landing here and sponging off the system as soon as
you walk out of the airport.

You can use the online estimator on the Family Assistance web site.

Prasad,

this is quite a sad posting, my view is that the Australians should offer no support for the first 2 years - easy handouts have ruined other countries,

Thanks Carlos,

It is not for sponging out the govt funds. These are the benefits that
the govt is offering . I felt that this is not known to some of
prospective immigrants like me. And that is why i would like to share
this info with the members and invite comments.

Cheers

As I implied earlier, you shouldn't count on these funds. Besides,
these payments that you **may be** eligible for are mostly child
care related. These are paid out by the Australian government
for a specific purpose. Finally, as others have pointed out, such
comments do not reflect on your motives for migrating to Australia.

MAte, these comments don't reflect too favourably on you. Thats one of the reasons I am leaving the UK, because I am paying for people sponging off the government, whilst those who need it get nothing.

to stop this, I think the oz government don't pay any benefits for the first 2 years anyway.

this may sound harsh, but if you can't afford to support yourself for at least 3-4 months, you really shouldn't make the move. If after 2 months you still don't find work that you like, there are plenty jobs that you won't like.

I am in IT, but if I don't find the job I want, I will pack shelves, pack groceries, drive a van, whatever it takes. Its about self pride, and providing for my family

And should IT be a special case? It doesn't matter what your skills,
you still need to be able to support yourself.

I'm sure you can feel the mood of the comments that you've received so far.

Recent migrants who intend to milk the system dry shouldn't expect to receive a warm welcome.

People coming from non-welfare states normally have no idea how this works. Sometimes these welfare benefits are equated to money falling from the sky, so why not grab it?

Pride takes a back seat for some.
