Need a job first? (NZ)
I want to migrate from the UK to NZ. I have read various documents on the
immigration website and would need to apply in the general skills catagory.
It seems to indicate, however, that I need a job offer first? Is this
correct? What are the chances of getting a job offer without any residency
status?
Can I just turn up on a tempory visa of some kind, rent a house and go and
find a job? Can I then work there and apply for residency? Or do I need a
resident permit before I can enter the country?

You do need a job offer now before you apply for Gen Skills. This category will be replaced later in the year though.
As for a temp visa you're best bet would be a plain old visitors visa, (granted free on entry). This will give you 6 mths there initially. You can look for work etc but not actually start. If needed you could apply for a work permit with the job offer then apply for PR.
Read the NZIS site back to front though, just so you know what you need to prepare, medicals, police checks etc, as it all takes time..

Check out http://www.stuff.co.nz/stuff/0,2106,0a8533,00.html and start
applying for jobs. It is a lot easier if you have a job offer first, but
applying will also build you some contacts if you decided to take a chance
on coming on a visitors visa.
