Default MODL .Net technologies 2231-79 required experience

Hi all,

¬Wondering if anyone can help me clarify the required experience to get the 60 MODL points for .Net technologies 2231-79? From my reading of http://www.immi.gov.au and http://www.acs.org.au/index.cfm?action=show&conID=modl I believed I required 12 months but when reading https://www.acs.org.au/assessment/do...bruary2009.pdf it seemed to me that I need 4 years! I have just short of 4 years IT experience with 2 in .Net specifically and a 4 year degree in Computer Applications from an Irish Uni.

I rang the IMMI to clarify what’s needed in the letter as both .Net and Linux on http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/gener...-in-demand.htm don't have an * beside them which for the other computing categories states that I require certain wording in the letter from the ACS. I was told on the phone that they were unsure but believed it to be a typo.

I now feel extremely confused by the situation!

The letter I got back from the ACS can be found *************************(apologies for the poor quality, it didn't scan well).

Any insight into this situation would be great as the main reason for this whole thing for me is to be with the gf in Sydney. Were not in a position to go for defacto and I can't afford a ring

Cheers,
Skylarkin

Hi Skylarkin,

you were completely right with your first assumption:

If you have an IT degree, you need four years fulltime IT relevant experience, whereof at least 12 months (and it doesn't have to be the last 12 months, only within the last 4 years) have to be in one of the specialised occupations - in your case in .net.

Here's the relevant ACS link:
https://www.acs.org.au/index.cfm?action=show&conID=modl

Matrisha,

Thanks for the reply. I've read that link before but couldn't find mention of the required 4 years IT experience. When I speak to the IMMI they seem to be unaware of it and the only reference I've found is in the PIM Guidelines Pdf. Have I missed it somewhere else or is it just ambiguous for everyone?

Regards,
Skylarkin

The four years IT experience is not a DIAC requirement, but an ACS requirement.
But if you're planning to apply for a GSM visa, you need your skills assessed - so there's no way around it in your case I'm afraid.

Have a look at section 2.2.8 (page 5) in the current ACS guidelines.
Since you have a major in IT, you fall into group A, and therefore need a minimum of "four (4) equivalent years of full-time relevant ICT
experience at professional level prior to the date of application" at ACS.

Only "Recent Graduates of an Australian University" don't need any work experience, but AFAIK they can't get an assessment in any MODL occupation (with specialisation).

Since you have nearly four years IT experience, I would suggest to wait just a few weeks/months more until you fulfill the work experience requirement for ACS.
But keep in mind that it has to be full time, anything less than 38 hours will be counted on a pro rata basis (but it has to be at least 20 hours per week).

No ambiguity, I think that DIAC employees may not be aware of all assessing authorities' requirements. What DIAC wants is you to pass the skills assessment before you apply for your visa, and the assessment process in your case is regulated by the ACS. ACS evidently has a right to raise a bar to where they seem fit, so 4 years it is, which by the way (most cases) gives you 10 points for specific work experience.

Thanks for that folks. The last two things that I'd like to get straigh are

1) the lack of a * on the MODL (http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/gener...-in-demand.htm) for .Net & Linux. Is anyone aware of what effect if any does this has?

2) If I'm applying for the Skilled Independent (Migrant) Visa (Subclass 175) which is offshore can I apply before getting my skills assessed? I ask with a mind to speeding up the application which as it stands for me is 9m for experience, 3m for ACS and approx 15m for visa: 2y 3m. Long distance and skype work but not for that long.

Cheers again for all the input guys. I've spent some much time reading, researching, talking to so called "migration specialists" and I should have been on here.

Regards,
Skylarkin

I think the * is a technicality, not a problem. As far as application process goes, you can not apply for the skills assessment before you have required number of years, it will be rejected otherwise. Same goes for the visa, having a positive skills assessment is a prerequisite. If you want to get there sooner, you could think of a temporary worker visa, if you find an employer, willing to sponsor you for one. It will allow to to gain experience up to 4 years needed, while being there, but it also carries certain risks and restrictions, such as being tied to your employer, etc. This article http://britishexpats.com/wiki/457_Visa_Restrictions explains pros and cons
