Default medicals for an american

Directed to Yanks who have been granted visas to live in Oz, but
anyone else who has an idea can answer too. What is the procedure for
getting medicals for an Aussie visa if one lives in the US? How much
would all the poking and prodding, x-rays, etc cost? Any chance of
medical insurance picking up (part of) the tab?

schedule an annual physical, that should include all the blood-work and an
x-ray (if you may have to insist on it) ... the hardest part is seeing a
radiologist as they refuse to be seen directly by patients ... just be
insistent with your primary doc, explain to him the situation and have him
fill out form 26, include all blood-work results (actual computer printouts,
the nurse can provide you with) ... as far as form 160 (the radiologist
report) the hardest part here is getting to see the radiologist, work this
issue thru your primary doc, only he can make the radiological appointment,
if he does the insurance should cover the whole shaaabang

Thanks for the response! So, I don't have to go to a DIMIA-appointed
doc in the States (my wife had practically no choice in who she went
to for her medicals in Oz to come to the US; the US Consulate will
only allow potential visa recipients to see a handful of physicians in
Australia, so just wondering about that)? It certainly would make
things easier if I could go to a doc of my choosing.

Hi Dave,

4000Psi is correct on everything but if u have already had ur annual check for this year then check with ur insurance if they will cover this one too. Coz if u already had the annual checkup for the year the insurance will not pay. My husbands medicals we had to pay as he had already finished his annual check up.

Good luck!!

Depending on your insurance plan, you may still have to pay out of
your pocket if you are like me and hadn't reached your annual
deductible even toward the end of the year. Also, the annual still may
not include X-RAYS or HIV testing.
My out-of-pocket for the meds at my local clinic (which has its own
radiology lab) was around $250 for just me. In the US, you must wait
for DIMIA to send the forms to you, as they are not as commonly
circulated here as in the UK. Make sure you read and understand them
before going to the doctor's office, because there's a 99% chance that
they've never seen any of these forms before. So you may have to
provide them with some guidance to minimize confusion, and maximize
the staffs time.

Second that. The procedure for filling in the forms - XRay as well as medical - is fairly exacting, to avoid fraud. Good idea to get several copies of the forms, so that you can start again if (when) they cock something up.

Mrs Rog had to have the blood test (HIV) done in the States at our local quack since they'd lost the blood in the UK one: it cost something like $300 for that alone.

It's a foreign concept (pun) for them here to do these medicals, so be prepared to check everything they write down before they seal the form up!

You'll also need FBI fingerprint checks - once again, get several FBI cards just in case.
