It wasn't the best experience in my life and it was only through pushing my doctor for a referral to a specialist did I then get the appropriate treatment.
Again very common. It's called Sheehan's syndrome.

I imagine that this was a difficult time for you - hope that you are well now.

Yep - my goiter started to grow after the birth of my daughter and so too did the Hashimotos I would imagine. I was never diagnosed with underactive thyroid (In fact my TSH was below the norm so I was actually subclinical hyperthyroid) but I can tell you now.......the flamin thing wasnt working the way it should thats for sure! I'm so glad that I had it removed - still not 100% but I'm not sure I ever will be? Who knows? Thyroid disease runs in my family - my mum and two of her sisters have also had thyroidectomies due to goiters - none of them know whether or not they also had hashi though.

Hi
I've got an under active thyroid as well, glad you've all started talking about this as I have also been concerned, meds booked for 15/2.

I'm on 150 mg levothroxine and really struggle with my weight, been on these for 8 months now still tired but levels stablising now.

How long before I can loose weight because I've been on the rosemary conerly diet and going to the gym for 6 months and have lost 2 lb's thats it !!:curse:

My doctor said I have the most common forms of thyroid problems but has never referred to it as Hashimotos.

Nice to meet you all surprised how many people have it.

Yes it wasn't the best of times. But I am ok now. Just annoyed everytime I have blood tests and they say its normal when clearly is still isn't without medication!!

But so glad to have found people on here with a similar situation.

Hi Ladies!

Wow so many of us with Thyroid probs. I am feeling so knackered again today. Had my mum-in-law over for Roast lunch and now could quite easily just fall asleep on the sofa! Thats all I'v done today is cook the Roast and I'm knackered, so you must know my Thyroid levels are stuffed at the moment and I'm feeling really tired.

When I went to see my new GP on Friday morning - she took one look at me and said "Sorry to say this but you are looking rather ill" & proceeded to take out 3 different colour tubes and took blood tests for the lab straight away. She did my pulse as well. Got to go back this week to see her again. I am constantly freezing cold - just cannot get warm. Have to sleep with socks on and long winter pj's, 13.5tog duvet and thick furry throw to be warm. Worst thing for me is now we can't start trying for a baby - and I'v waited 2yrs for this. Very upsetting - but like she said - she needs to get me well first and doesnt reckon I'd get pregnant at this moment in time - because of my thyroid causing ill health!

Good news about the Gastric band in Australia though! Yep I was very very lucky to get funding through Plymouth PCT for mine - due to my history of weight issues due to thyroid probs since childhood. My surgeon is Mr Welbourne at Musgrove Hospital, Taunton. So every appointment I have and fill or de-fill I have is covered. My PCT funding for the op covered my post-op care for life as well (so I was told).

But yep I'v heard of Hashmito's too. I also started getting "Carpal Tunnel Syndrome" a few years back - which is usually linked to thyroid probs. But luckily after following wrist excercise advice from my previous GP in Surrey - it went within 6wks or so.

Who knows - maybe this new GP is going to find something else linked? I asked to be referred to a Thyroid Specialist when I lived up in Surrey and was told that they don't refer patients to Thyroid specialists on the NHS unless you need surgery!

Please forgive me if there are any typo's in this message - but I'm so tired - can't think straight here - yep and it's only 7.30pm'ish!

Maybe we could start a Thyroid thread for us Gals!

see ya

Maybe I'll get the name of your doctor when we arrive!

I got pregnant within 4 weeks of getting diagnosed with it, and I have to say it was really hard work. I was tired the whole 9 months! and the medication was up and down so much I couldn't keep up with it. Definitely get yourself sorted first, and make sure you rest as much as you can when you do get pregnant.

I've also lost just over a stone in weight over the past 12 months just by being on the right meds.

Just need to sort out the anaemia now

If you do come over to SA let me know if you want the doctors name and details. He's fabulous and he bulk bills too (so it's free for consultations, blood tests etc).

I spend approx $52 per prescription for Eutroxsig(thyroxine in the UK) and Tertroxine (helps the eutroxsig work as my body can't convert it on it's own, which is why I still felt crap on just thyroxine in the UK).

Theres also a really good website here: http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/
Wendy, can you PM me his details, I was diagnosed with hypothryroidism 6 month before we emigrated, I am borderline but feel crap a lot of the time. When I speak to my doctor see just suggests upping the meds, surely there must be a better way without all the contradictory bull****
cheers

Hi again Thyroid Chicks

I don't have time to type a huge post now but I wonder if any of you have other autoimmune issues as well as thyroid. I have a few and many of the symptoms are similar so be sure that you're not just putting everything down to "oh it's my thyroid". For many years I did just that in relation to an early hysterectomy (endometriosis) and menopause, not knowing I had a thyroid issue.

When I have more time - if you're interested! - I'll write a rambling post about all my issues and my research, good books I've found, etc. I'm a firm believer in not just accepting conventional medicine (I did it for years and I think it has a lot to answer for) and always look for alternatives.

Hopefully we can share experiences.

I was told for years that I was going through an early menopause after having a hysterectomy only to then discover I had Hypothyroidism!!!!!!
You are right when you say that most symptoms are then put down to that. I would love to read what you have researched ect, I should really do some myself!!!

Well I'm somehow still awake (only because I'm sitting browsing the forum...lol).

I'v been reading through all your posts ref various thyroid probs etc. and thought I'd go into further detail - now that you are all fully into this topic.

When I was 13yrs old my GP in S.Africa sent me for a scan on my thyroid. As some of you may know the thyroid looks like 2 nodules. They discovered that I have only 1 nodule - but half of this. So effectively a 1/4 of the thyroid nodule/gland. My thyroid has NEVER worked without medication. Like I said in my earlier post - I have been on thyroid medication since childhood and have had weight problems ever since. I'v been told I will be on Thyroxine for the rest of my life!

When I asked my GP up in Surrey to refer me to a "Thyroid Specialist" he said "No, we only refer patients to a Thyroid Specialist if they need surgery!". But to me surely if I was referred to one now - at least they know more about the thyroid and associated medical problems to do with the thyroid and metabolism than a GP?!?

Like I said - I'v got to go back to my New GP on Friday about my blood test results and Dave (my OH) says I should tell her I'd like to be referred to a Thyroid specialist. Why wait til I someday get to Aussie - I need the help Now!

Well ladies I am going to bed now - otherwise I am going to battle to get up in the morning (I don't do mornings...lol - especially in winter).

Will chat again tomorrow.

nite nite

Hashi's is antibodies against (little bits of) the thyroid.

http://www.emedicine.com/med/topic949.htm

What makes you think that it's inflammatory? The "itis" in thyroiditis?
