Medical Cover
I understand that we will not qualify for full state medical cover until we
have been resident for 2 years. I have a partner and 2 year old son, so
would appreciate any advice as to what sort of private(?) medical cover we
should be looking to take out on arrival in Sydney. We have PR visas.
Any advice much appreciated

You've confused this with not being eligible for many of the available
welfare payments for the first 2 years. Medicare is not included in this
restriction. You can sign up almost immediately, which you should do. Then
look into the various private health insurance companies and figure out
which is best for your needs.
Good luck,
Helena

Re: Medical Cover
Australian PRs are entitled to Medicare on arrival in Australia. If you and
your partner are anticpating earning over $100,000 then it is worth taking
out private cover as you will be charged an annual levy which costs
significantaly more than private health insurance. Easiest way of getting
health cover is to walk into one of the shops that pretty much all of the
private health insurers operate.
