IT market not very good in Perth
Hi,
Currently many IT people are changing carriers, simply because there
isn't enough IT work in Perth. Check with the local agencies about
your opportunities before you decide moving to Perth.

Re: IT market not very good in Perth
The Perth market is dominated by the WA government and companies doing work
for the WA government. AFAIK, their is only one major employer who's work is
not ultimatly government sourced and that is Bank West and they've just been
taken over by HRBOS, so expect a lot of "synergy" coming from that deal.
Perth is a great place, but my advice to anyone with an option is to stay
away for the moment and come with times are better. IMHO, that must come,
the banks and other financial institutions have an application deficit that
must sometime get financed and not all projects are of a nature that gets
outsourced to other countries.

I can confirm that the IT market isn't too great at the moment. But -
I arrived here mid-December last year, didn't start looking seriously
until after Christmas and was working by mid-February. So it didn't
take me too long, as long as you are prepared to be realistic on rates
i.e. I started on less than half what I used to earn in the UK

Re: IT market not very good in Perth
I am an IT consultant and I will certainly *try* to get IT work when I move
over to Perth in January - however at the end of the day my decision to move
to Perth was not to forward my IT career, but for a lifestyle change, and if
that means getting a different job until the market picks up then then
sobeit. IT is poor everywhere not just Perth, essentially because every
Tom, Dick and Harry jumped on the IT bandwagon in 99, 2000. I would imagine
it is these people who are leaving IT for good and going elsewhere. For me
it is a hobby as well as a job and if I have to continue it as a hobby
whilst I do something else then fine, but I will be back :-)

Re: IT market not very good in Perth
I'm not sure if this post is referring just to IT, but there are a lot
of mining/resources/agriculture based concerns in Perth. Although
they probably offer fewer opportunities in IT compared to other
professions like finance or engineering.

This is not intended to be legal advice in any jurisdiction

Those are my feelings exactly, hence my amazement at actually getting half
of UK rate. I'm closer to a third. However, given the lifestyle change and
the fact that a pound buys rather more in Oz than it does near London, I'm
happy with the trade. For the record I jumped the (still standing,
instruments tuning) bandwagon in '85 ish.

Bear in mind, January is school holidays so the job market is even
quieter.
Some companies for you to look at in Perth are DMR & ASG. Other than
that, as someone else has said, the market is dominated by government
jobs. Meaning you apply for a job and two months later they still
haven't made a decision.....

I'm surprised at the amount of narrow-mindedness around. IT is not
some Holy Grail of employment. Sometimes it's not easy to find a job.
So you try harder rather than sitting around waiting for someone to
walk up and offer you the Earth to come and work for them. You need to
be a footballer to get that sort of interest.
As someone alluded to earlier, maybe this downturn will encourage the
less able candidates to get out of the industry, leaving the rest to
carry on with their chosen profession.

Now why would somebody throw away his or her current job and move, jobless, to a new land during a slowdown like this?
Isn't it better to hold on to your job and ride out the downturn?
Unless your PR is running out soon...

Re: IT market not very good in Perth
Cheers Mark,
I realise Jan is school hols. I am planning on having a couple weeks of
holiday anyway so it will be feb before I am looking anyway.
I do take the point and it is an unfortunate time of the year to be going -
my partner is a school teacher and it looks like she will miss out on jobs
for Feb unless we can sort something out from over here, but it seems that
the OZ police check requirement will hinder that

Its not all doom and gloom....
I came over to Perth from the UK in Sept 02 on a working holiday visa, spent 3months enjoying the fantastic lifestyle / weather etc in WA, started looking for a job around Novemeber time, had an interview just around xmas time started in my new position mid Jan...
Id been in a fairly specialised area of IT in the UK for about 9years, (IBM AS400's ) working for myself through the contract boom period and then decided after it crashed that there had to be more to life than chasing up useless recruitment agencys....
Hence we sold up, took a massive gamble and came to Perth...
After getting the new job my partner and I applied for PR, this didnt come through in the 3 months we were allowed to work under our WH visa, so we moved onto a 457 visa, we came back to the UK in Aug 03 and got the PR stamped in the passports.....
The job i took was based around the technology platform I knew but was completely different to anything Id done before, rather than Tech support orientated for a organisation I now work for a consultancy that looks after all the major companies in Perth that use the same system. Salary wise I could never expect to earn the same amounts as when contracting around 2000 but if I had to get a permanent job in the UK now I would have to probably take a 20% pay cut over what I earn in Perth (yes I did say cut)
My advice is dont come here if your only goal is to try and earn more money, thats not what Perth is about, once you get here you wont to work to work anyway, its far to nice to waste your life doing something so mundane!!! No seriously appreciate the change in lifestyle and when its 35 degrees for the 25th day in a row and your in an office overlooking the swan river check out a webcam in London and remember back to 3pm darkness, 6 degrees wet & windy , the thought of that nights journey down the M4 to queue for 2hrs round the M25.... you wont care how much you earn, you'll just be sending emails back to old friends telling them what there missing out on.....
Steve
PS: Get here quick enough and you might get to see England win the Rugby World Cup, well stuff the Bok's anyway )
