Hiya,

thought this might interest some of you. The bottom line I guess is: tough
times ... .

Jennifer Foreshew DECEMBER 04, 2001

Hi-TECH job advertisements plunged by 25 per cent in November, with 3500 fewer roles
advertised, according to the Olivier Internet Job Index.

The index also recorded a 27.2 per cent drop in multimedia vacancies for the past
month. Olivier Recruitment group director Robert Olivier said there were more jobs
in accounting than in IT&T for the first time in the two-year history of the index.
"Can it fall again? Obviously, it can and probably will for the next two months," Mr
Olivier said.

"I am afraid a lot of people who have been retrenched may as well sit on a beach, at
least until mid-January.

"February will mark the first opportunity when normal business levels will be
resumed."

The survey shows IT&T job vacancies have fallen 77.5 per cent in a year and
multimedia, internet and graphics are down 87.1 per cent.

Desktop support and help-desk roles were down by 41 per cent in November. "Employers
are not getting so many support calls because clients are not as active, so support
jobs are being cut."

Mr Olivier said there was evidence that expatriate professionals were returning home
as opportunities in the United States and Europe dried up.

He said superannuation and payroll tax would be critical impediments to an increase
in employment.

"The likelihood of improvement in the IT sector will be driven by global events
feeding into business confidence and greater certainty," he said.

The number of Australian jobs advertised on the internet overall in November fell 14
per cent, which resulted in 9500 fewer vacancies.

This follows a 9 per cent fall in the previous month, bringing the Olivier Internet
Job Index to an all-time low.

"While IT has been going down for a long time, other sectors held up reasonably well,
but they are now following the same curve steeply down over the last two months," Mr
Olivier said.
