I just got the letter no-one wants from the ACS. My "qualifications have been
assessed as unsuitable". I applied for Recognition of Prior Learning and I believe I
should qualify, however I made a hash of my application. In the letter the assessor
said that my response to section 3 was inadequate and my references weren't dated or
were too vague. I know this as I had to repost dated references and wage slips a
month after initially applying to the ACS. As you can imagine I am upset. I truly
believe that with over 10 years working in IT in various areas I fulfill the criteria
but that my sloppiness has let me down. I have had my heart set on going back to
Australia for 3 years and this is a real blow, thanks Santa. It costs AUD300 to
appeal but I don't know how to appeal or whether it's taken seriously. Does anybody
have any advice? Distraught Irishman...

May I offer some advice...use the services of a registered migration agent who will
be able assist you in collecting and assessing the required information. I used Ian
Harrop and Associates and found them to be invaluable...even though my trade is not
computer related. His website can be found here:

http://members.aol.com/ianharrop/mig.htm

Hope this helps

Hi There,

Sorry to hear that you did not get through but don't give up. why don't you contact an agent most give an initial interview free of charge and at least they can tell you your chances.

We applied first in 1994 but although my huband had the correct qualifications he wasn't directly working in the profession for which his qualifications were. Undetered he changed occupation and we have reapplied. He has had his trade recognised successfully and we are now like everyone else in the long que awaiting visas. So don't give up if you really want to get there, there is nothing stopping you, it just may take a little longer than you first anticipated.

Default Don't despair

Paul,

I'm sorry to hear about ACS's verdict. Instead of going on an appeal, why don't you take up the case afresh? I don't know, though, if there is a prescribed time gap between two consecutive assessment applications. Please check this out. If you really have 10 years of IT experience and are working in IT, at present, I strongly beleive that you should go for ACS skill assessment and NOT for RPL.

You may approach a registered agent, as advised by others here, if you are not confident of being able to get the act together, on your own. Honestly, it's not that difficult. It's all about patience and visiting the ACS website repeatedly and reading the procedures over and over a couple of times. You would be able to do it, Man. Come on go for it. You can do it.

I await your eMail when you get your skills assessed positively from ACS.

Cheers

Hi Paul,

We specialise in RPL cases and recently ran a seminar with ACS (in conjunction with
Glenn Newton) which dwelt on this area in some detail. I would be happy to assist. I
am a little surprised that Alan mentioned Glenn and not ourselves in that respect,
but to be fair we haven't marketed ourselves strenuously in his direction, and he may
not have been aware of our special skills...

Anyway, your first step must be to shoot over a cv to us, or Glenn or whoever. If you
have your previous RPL effort in an emailable form you should send that as well.

Best regards

George Lombard

Thanks for all the positive feedback guys! I'm heading out to Oz next month for a
holiday (if Sydney's still there!) and will follow up on your advice. I will have to
decide what to do before I go but I will bring all my documents out so at least I
will be prepared, whether I appeal or reapply. I would like to have dealt with the
procedure myself as I feel that using an agent is sort of cheating but now that I
have failed through my own sloppiness I see the point of using the experience of an
agent such as yourselves (all above). Thanx again, every bit of support is gratefully
accepted at a time like this.

Hi Paul,

I've got 15 years experience and I have been declined twice !!!!! I am an Oracle DBA, one of the most sought after IT positions.

I met the president of the ACS last week - John Ridge, he bought me breakfast. Nice chap. He then brought me back to the ACS HQ, where I met the immigration manager - Sarah. Nice lady. We sat down and went through every piece of documentation I had. I could only manage to scrape together 3 years and 11 months of references. My biggest problem was getting references ( I have been a contractor for a long time and my bosses were also contractors and I can't find them anymore). They recognised that this was a major stumbling block for a lot of IT prof. especially from Europe, where references are looked upon as 'not worth the paper they are written on'.
I have a degree, but not an IT degree, it has some computing modules on it, but not alot.
Anyway, they eventually pointed out to me that I should be going for this RPL thing. I filled it in at the weekend, pure bullshit, but that's what they want, isn't it. They basically want to see what you have learned from your time in IT other than what you can do. I don't suppose I could have a look at what you wrote, could I ?
I wouldn't bother with immigration agencies, all they will do is get you to dictate to them anyway and then charge thousands of dollars !! Try again Paul, I am and this time I feel lucky.

There are undoubtedly some shonky firms out there however in defence of the reputable
migration agents (several of whom make valuable and fee-free contributions here)
maybe you would not need to be making your third application if you had received good
advice from a professional in the first place. Good luck with the application anyway.
Cheers, Steve

My husband has also worked as a contractor for most of the 17 years he has spent in IT. He was worried about getting references at any time in the future, so each time he left a job, he asked for a reference to take with him. All the companies were willing to oblige, which thankfully made the task of applying for his RPL that much easier.

He too has a degree, not in IT, but Science with only a few computer-related modules. He spent several weeks getting together all the paperwork he needed for the RPL, and took care to fill in the application form as carefully as possible. We checked the ACS website regularly for changes, and went through the final application together one evening, checking for any tiny typo or trivial entry that could cost us. Attention to detail and accuracy does pay off, it only took the ACS three weeks to send us a positive reply!

Alright people? Thanks again for all the support. It sounds like this whole procedure
should be simpler but I suppose that would let chancers through. I have references
but the ACS Immigration officer (Sarah, the nice lady Dave mentions above) told me
they were too vague. It shouldn't be a problem, in effect I can draft the references
myself and ask my employers or ex-employers to reproduce and sign them. Because I
worked as IT manager in non-IT firms the references from employers tend not to
concentrate on my duties etc., as computers are magical things to them - so I'll just
have to try again like some of you and get more exact ref's. Thanks again and I'll
keep you up to date with any developments.

Hi Paul,

I can't really tell what's the best to do as I came to Australia on a completely
other visa. But I can strongly recommend George Lombard! When you come to Sydney
anyway, take all your paper work (documents etc.) and bring it to George. He WILL
make it happen! I'm sure of that!

Good luck and have a nice holiday in Sydney. Susi

Don't give up, keep at it!

As Alan Collett suggested, I'd recommend you contact someone like Glenn at Alms
(www.alms.com.au) to help you.

I'm in the throes of applying for my RPL with Glenn's help. It does take time and
alot of effort but hopefully we'll all get there in the end! If you'd like to
"exchange notes" please do drop us an email.

Regards Kevin
