holiday visa renewal
If you go to Oz on a holiday visa, can you renew it while you are there, or do you have to leave to do so ?
Yes, I know you have to leave each time you reach your "maximum stay" period, but if you do not intend to return to the UK but opt for a "short" trip out and back, it would be easier to re-apply while in Oz.

Re: holiday visa renewal
You can usually apply for a new tourist visa onshore, provided you meet
the requirements and do not have 'Condition 8503-No Further Stay' on
your visa.
Condition 8503 may be imposed on your onshore tourist visa if you are
successful.
Also, those attempting to extend their stay by leaving and returning on
an ETA may encounter problems if the immigration inspector thinks they
are trying to establish de-facto residence in Australia.

This is not intended to be legal advice in any jurisdiction
the requirements and do not have 'Condition 8503-No Further Stay' on

Re: holiday visa renewal
I would add that:
1. ETAs cannot be applied for and/or granted in Australia.
2. ETAs costs nothing in theory, while a regular visitor visa has an associated application fee. See Form 990i.
