Default help with NZ visa

Can anyone check to see if i`m on the right track, We want to apply for a pr visa to new zealand but unfortuanutly not quite reached the points but with in the 5 points allowed. My husbands job is on the shortage list for ceratain areas.Do we go ahead and apply for pr visa but leave the uk with a working visa in the hope he gets a job offer within 6 months (how easy is it to get your pr visa prossed when you get your job offer?)
And do your medicals stay in date because you have already lodged all your visa information?
I hope this makes sense in what i`m trying to find out?
thanks for any help

Kerrie - your understanding seems quite correct on all points. In addition, your husband's qualifications/ training should be related to his area of job experience. It's meant to be straightforward to get your PR confirmed once your husband has got the job offer, since your original PR application has already been effectively approved except for the additional job points. Your medicals only need be in date at the date of app lodgement.

Cheers - Don

I a gather a 'work visa' is the same as a JSV? Are there
seperate applications for a PR visa and JSV?

Not really. A work visa is just that - a visa which gives you the right to get a work permit and stay and work in NZ for a set, small number of years.

A JSV (Job Search Visa) is when you apply for Gen Skills PR visa, fall no more than 5 points short of the passmark, and are allowed to go look for a job (and start work) in NZ for up to 6 months - if you get an appropriate job you will get more points and therefore meet the points passmark and therefore get PR. Loads more info on this site if you do a search.

Cheers - Don

I called NZIS today and they told me it takes 5 weeks to process a JSV. Reading other postings this seems optimistic.
Wonder if anyone has recently applied for a JSV.

I'd just caution you to make sure you're possibly not talking at cross purposes with the NZIS officer. Processing your PR visa through London at the moment is reported to be taking 6-9 months. Once it's been processed and you don't qualify for PR outright but you're offered a JSV and you apply for it, that's when the extra processing time will be about 5 weeks.

No I don't think so Don. When we applies for a JSV it was done in a matter
of days (last July) and PR was taking about 6 to 9 months. JSV is a lot
quicker than PR. Don't know why but it just seems to be. Also when you
apply for PR send a cover letter stating that you want a JSV and they will
send you that form strait away )

A JSV is a work visa, but not every work visa is a JSV ...

This is not intended to be legal advice in any jurisdiction

Wrong. You cannot start work on a JSV.

Can anyone confirm the processing time for NZ PR and the JSV. I'm wondering who to go with, Don or Emily!

My house has just gone on the market and I'm about to apply for PR (JSV) and I'm panicking that I'll have to get over to NZ before the house is sold. Even though it should sell reasonably quickly, if I get the JSV within a few weeks it will be impossible to get the house sold in the 3 months I'd have available and I don't want to eat into my 6 months in NZ.

My application has to go in because my medicals run out next month. I was hoping that everything would 'happen' at the end of the summer!

Any other views on this, just to add to my confusion, would, as always, be gratefully received!

Thanks guys!

Whoops, sounds like I stand corrected. As Winston Churchill or someone else famous said, when the facts change I change my position (somewhat paraphrased).

See above, if someone has actually done it relatively recently in a few weeks (JSV approval from scratch) it would be good additional evidence. Anyone? You could always email NZIS central on the Q&A forum on the main NZIS website - answers 'guaranteed' back in 5 days.

On the other hand, July 2002 was at the end of the 'fast' processing time for PR visas. If it really is 5 weeks for 'PR fail but JSV grant', here's a strategy for applicants who meet the PR passmark without a job offer (6-9 months' wait currently in London for standard PR apps):

Apply with 27 points, ie 1 point short. In other words, don't offer up the settlement funds point, the spouse qualifications point etc. Say you really want the JSV and get it back in 5 weeks. Go to NZ and get a job offer - anthing will do as you only need 1 more point and non-relevant jobs get 2 points. Barman, roadsweeper, dustbinman (no disrespect, those are useful jobs). Now get your PR.

Somehow I don't think that will work, ie IMO it's no longer (Feb 2003) 5 weeks to get JSV.

Unless anyone knows any better...

Cheers - Don
