Help - confused teacher about visas
Hi all, i'm a newbie to this.
Righto I wondered if you can help. I am sixth form college teacher, aged 37, with partner aged 45 (who is a plumber/welder/pipefitter). I am thinking about looking to emigrate to Australia, but when I did the test I got 115 points for the 175 visa and you need 120. Bit more confusing here as I am an ICT teacher and can use databases etc and so when I put down that I am an IT specialist a I got 130 points (dont know whether I can go down this route though as I teach and am not using databases all day long). So what I want to know is which visa route should I go down?????
Should I go for the 457 to work in W Australia or stick with the 175? However this is confusing in itself because when I look at the 457 visa you need to be registered with the W Australia teaching council - now you cant be reg with the council unless you get a valid visa- duh!!!!! Am I thick or am I missing something here. That would mean I would have to go for the 175 visa - but the whold point of going for the 457 is because I dont or I think I dont have enough points!!!! My brain is going into melt down.
Please help a very confused Captain :curse:

Are you hoping to go to WA as PR would will give you greater choice, 457 ties you down to one area where you have no choice in picking you work where they need a position filled.
Yes you can register with WACOT prior to having visa, my other half has done 70% of it this morning and hopefully will get it finished today once kids are in bed.
Registration is just about the same for every state I believe, fairly straight forward process.

Yes you can register with tesching council prior to visa but you will also have to get your skills assessed by teaching australia as beofre your visa application - this proves your qualifications as equivalent to Aussie ones - if you have degree and PGCE then you should be fine - if you have GTP or are an instructor / unqualified teacher (I saw you are a sixth-form teacher) then my understanding, i may be wrong though!!!, is that you will struggle to pass the Teach Aus assessment for the visa.
Obviously you've worked out your years of experience for visa points.....
ONe last thing - WA (I think) sponsors teachers - this open up the possibilty of getting a 176 permanet visa instead of a 175 (this is the route we took with VIC as we were 5 pts short too). The 176 has a lower pass mark and you get points for the sponsorship. Try searching on the WA education website...

Hi confused teacher
The WA Department of Education and Training is looking to sponsor teachers on 457 visas in key areas of learning, we will be visiting the UK in Oct and Nov to take a stand at the Emigrate exhibition in Coventry and Opportunities Australia in Leeds and London. We will also be holding interviews. Information about teaching in Western Australia can be found at www.det.wa.edu.au/teachingwa this is updated regularly and will soon have full info. re. our UK trip (which will also include Scotland and Dublin). With regard the 457 and registering with WACOT catch 22, you can do a preliminary registration with WACOT with a view to you obtaining your visa later.
For more specific information about 457's, WACOT and teaching in WA you can email [email protected]
Please note, I am posting these details on this forum for information only, I am not able to enter into individual discussions. Contact the teachingwa team via the email address above - they are the ones with all the up to date details.

Re: Help - confused teacher about visas
Thanks for all your replies - I received some info from the WACOT the other day and they told me that ICT was not a shortage secondary subject. So I really dont know what to do now. I originally thought about going to NZ because my OH is 45 and we'd have a better chance of getting in. Also he is is a welder/plumber/pipefitter (problem also with that though is that he didnt obtain many quals on the way but has been doing this since the age of 17), he currently owns a plumbing business with his son and they are Corgi registered but its his son who has the official college C and Guilds quals!!!!
The more I look into this the more confusing it becomes.
I think it will be a good idea to attend Opportunities Australia in Leeds - as its in the NW. I honestly do not know where people start, and I think how can I be so thick i'm supposed to have some intelligence!!! Are there any other exhibs out there that are close to Manchester/Liverpool that might be useful???

If you want MODL points for IT, you need to meet ACS requirements for a skill assessment in that specialism.
Did you look at http://www.migration.wa.gov.au
An employer can sponsor for permanent residence (not points tested).
