Default Good places to live in Brisbane

I am thinking about moving to Brisbane to live and work for a little while.
I would like to purchase a 2 bed apartment close to the CBD but not in the
CBD... preferably 20 - 25 mins by public transport in peak hour traffic. I
am interested in areas that would be considered neat, tidy, quiet and safe
neighbourhoods.

Thanks in advance!

Rent initially, until you know enough about the city and the way transport
etc works to choose where to buy wisely.

Six month leases are easy to get - return of rental bonds etc is well
regulated through the Residential Tenancies Authority:
http://www.rta.qld.gov.au/

Suburbs/areas which meet your requirements include Fortitude Valley,
Wilston, Kelvin Grove, Red Hill, Paddington, Bardon, Toowong - and others.

Have a browse here:

Good Luck!!

Hey, thanks so much for the information. Do you know much about the suburb
of Capalaba? I like the way it is conveniently positioned between the coast
and Brisbane CBD.

There's no train station in Capalaba, just a bus link to Birkdale; think it takes about an hour to get to the city
http://www.qr.com.au/
IE:

Capalaba Bus Stop (Bus Stop) 7:10am
Birkdale (Bus Stop) 7:22am
Change Services
Birkdale (Station) 7:34am
Central (Platform 4) 8:15am

Thanks for that. An excellent bit of information. I guess Capalaba may be a
little bit too far but I'll have a look at some of the other suburbs that "A
Mate" mentioned.

No worries.

They're all good suburbs - Wilston/Grange area in particular I like, it has a small 'village feel' to it. A few coffee shops/indian/pizza & Italian/icecream places plus your usual small stores. Ten minutes out of the city by train and set up on a hill, so a some good city views from parts as well.

Capalaba is an outer suburb!! It's OK!; but by Brisbane standards is well
out of the city!! 30 minutes is regarded as being the 'limit' for close
commuting here!! So Aspley in the North, Mt Gravatt in the South, Camp Hill
in the East, and Ashgrove in the west would be your limits!!

Rent when you arrive in Brisbane - to buy with no knowledge would be verging
on criminal (you yourself being the principal victim!!)!!

Real Estate prices in Brisbane are static - in the most optimistic appraisal
of the situation; in decline in reality!!

Take your time!! Research!! Be assured that Brisbane is a lovely city; very
liveable. Growing rapidly, superb facilities, lovely climate!! You wouldn't
want to sour your experience of all this through a 'dodgy' real estate
deal!!!

Take your time!!!

Have Fun!!!

Oh absolutely! I intend to scout around and find a decent place before I
consider buying. Your suggestion of renting is a very good one and I will
certainly do this first. I guess being in Brisbane for a few months will
give me a better understanding of what's available.

You seem very knowledgable on Brisbane city. Tell me, how does Brisbane
compare to other major Australian cities with respect to employment
prospects ... especially in Information Technology.

Thanks.

Good Question!! My son holds a B. IT (Hons) and a B Ed as well as various
Microsoft and Novell certificates. He works in 'Tech Support' right now
because that's where the money is for him!! He tells me there is a growing
return to 'in house' IT staff, as outsourcing (and even contracting locally)
increasingly proves too 'remote' and unable to meet local needs accurately;
and more importantly, less cost effective!! I think there are a range of
vacancies in Brisbane- but there are undoubtedly more positions in Sydney -
trouble is - the cost of living in Sydney is much higher; especially the
cost of real estate!! Brisbane and Melbourne are much more 'liveable'
cities than Sydney. Population of Brisbane is about 1.5 million - and there
are a number of High Tech industries domiciled here, including Boeing Austr.
etc. The State Government promotes a 'Smart State' image, and supports their
thrust with tax concessions and similar iniatives.
Naturally - your employability depends on your formal qualifications
(especially industry certifications), and more importantly - your
expertise - proven expertise!

Good Luck!!

Man, you're a wealth of information. When I make it to Brissy I'll buy you a
beer!

Yeah, I've got the necessary certifications, expertise and experience. I
know I'm blowing my own trumpet but I am pretty good at what I do. ;-) I'm
just looking for a change in scenery and a warmer climate. Brisbane looks
like a wonderful city to work and live in. It's only an hour from some darn
good beaches so IMO it's the perfect place to be.
