Default giving up citizenship

Hi, looking for info on giving up my oz citizenship. My marriage has turned sour and I've moved back to uk.

Funds are short, I've no intention of moving back to oz.

Needing info on what to do. Claiming super back, tax ect....

Any info would be much appreciated.

Cheers Kim

Is the only reason you are giving up citizenship to access your super fund?

I'm not sure that will help. You must have had a temporary visa when you contributed to the fund I think...were you ever on a temp visa, 457 etc?

I've thought of it but to what end? Having citizenship costs nothing and, even if never again "used" doesn't affect anything unless you try for citizenship in a place like the USA where dual nationality isn't allowed.

You will find information here on the citizenship website. Currently costs $285 to do so.

Yes, that's the main reason. I was on a temp visa to start with.

Where in heaven's name did you come up with that? My son & his 2 children, brother, sister-in-law and neice are all dual American/Canadian citizens.

I hang my head in shame! It's something I must have read years ago when living in the US part-time and have never questioned it.

>>Although the U.S. Government does not endorse dual citizenship as a matter of policy, it recognizes the existence of dual citizenship and completely tolerates the maintenance of multiple citizenship by U.S. citizens.<< (Wikipedia)

>>The Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) neither defines dual citizenship nor takes a position for it or against it. There has been no prohibition against dual citizenship, but some provisions of the INA and earlier U.S. nationality laws were designed to reduce situations in which dual citizenship exists. Although naturalizing citizens are required to undertake an oath renouncing previous allegiances, the oath has never been enforced to require the actual termination of original citizenship<< (Wikipedia)

You can withdraw Super tax free under very limited circumstances. Not sure renouncing citizenship is one of them.

Ye I heard you could be a temporary resident and then apply for a departing temporary resident payment?

I can't see how a citizen can be described as a temporary resident!
