hi George
I sent my medicals to adelaide on oct 10th 2002 on request from
adelaide. I just recently sent an email to my case officier inquiring
about the status and he mentioned that since i have usa residency it
is taking time to get background checks back. In your experience how
long is it taking for people from the usa for background checks to
complete
thanks

Re: to George Lombard
Hi David, Hi Vimal,
Two questions:
a) US police clearances are easy but the background checks are taking
forever, for no apparent reason in many cases. No point sweating it. If
you have a career option here you can get a temporary visa to cover you. If
not, just wait.
b) All case officers can be contacted using the formula
[email protected] but don't expect that sending an email will
get a reply. Bear in mind that each has 1000 applications to deal with and
will do anything at all to get them off their hands, such as referring the
whole file to an overseas Australian embassy and interminable delays. This
would not be an attractive option. We had an email today from New Delhi for
a client whose application was lodged in India in March 2001 - the final
decision is still six months away. So rule 1 is no pestering Adelaide :-)
Cheers

Re: to George Lombard
I was in the same situation, waited 6 months after my request for
medicals and police clearances (sent state clearance certificates, was
told they were doing background checks in the US).. got frustrated and
sent them an FBI clearance and received a pre-grant letter in 3
weeks... don't know if that's just circumstantial, but my theory is it
doesn't hurt, so why not?

Thanks George for your prompt response but
How long are background checks usually taking in months? Also are
backgrounds from only the US taking long or other countries have the
similar wait time
thanks

Sorry forgot to add the following. I know reading the discussion that
if the visa is granted one is given a validation date in australia one
year from when medicals/Police clearance were taken. Say you
medicals/Pc expire in may 03 and your visa is granted april 03. Will
they still let you land in australia in one month or does one have to
redo medicals/PC.
thanks

Re: to George Lombard
I applied in March 2001 (with my wife and two young sons) with medicals and
a simple statement from the local police that I had no outstanding warrants
for my arrest. Everything was completed and the passports were back in our
hands from DC by mid July 2001. The visa was valid until March of 2001 (one
year from submission of application). We arrived in January. No worries.
Maybe Sept. 11 changed everything, I don't know.
