Hi Matt,
If you haven't done so already, definitely front load your application with police and medicals. My UK fiance (now husband of 1 month!) applied last may in London. At that stage they were still quoting 6 month wait and to wait until requested for medicals/police checks. We of course did our own research, as you definitely should (we are astounded how little some of the staff at DIMA know) and decided to front load anyway. Paid off ... we got our visa grant back in 2 weeks. We figured the 6 month wait was mainly due to lag time between LHC requesting for meds/police checks and being able to get an appointment for meds, wait for them to come back, then resupply to LHC.
In addition, throw everything you can at them re evidence of your relationship. We put so much stuff in, plus more stat decs than required, heaps of photos, all the letters etc. They couldn't say no!
