Default Formalities Required

Hi All

Are there any legal formalities that are required to be fulfilled after landing in Australia\minimum durartion of stay etc. We are initially planning to stay for a fortnight, comeback and the fly back after 6 months.

Thanks in advance

You just need to leave the airport
Nothing else you specifically need to do, although opening a bank
account and getting a tax file number are both good ideas.

Just to add that there's no need for a TFN on the first visit unless you have Australia-source income - you won't be deemed to be tax resident in Australia until you move to Australia to live ...

Best regards.

Just to add to what Alan has said:

- you don't need to get a TFN on your validation visit
- getting a TFN makes no difference to your tax liability or tax
residence status

But it's just one less thing to do when you make the move proper.

If you have time, why not sit the driving theory test and get an Australian
driving license. You can get all the info and an example of the test on
their web site www.rta.nsw.gov.au (for NSW). You will need to use an address
of someone you know out there for this though. This, along with your
passport with visa will give you the two most widely used form of ID you
will require to do anything else; Bank account, TFN etc. If you fail the
theory test, it will also give you plenty of time to swat up on it before
you sit it again.

If you are worried about this invalidating your UK driving license, I have
heard that some unscrupulous people report their UK driving licence lost
upon their return to the UK and get issued an other one. I suppose this
means that in theory you could pick and choose what license you get any
points put on.

Default Tax File Number

Actually Jeremy, I probably wouldn't apply for a TFN on the initial visit as it might mean the ATO expecting a Tax Return to be filed for a year in which the questioner isn't actually resident in Australia => more aggravation rather than less.

Applying for a TFN is such straightfoward process (see http://www.ato.gov.au/forms.asp#TFN), that I would simply put it on the list of things to do in the first week or two after moving to Australia.

Best regards.

All NSW should do is either punch a hole in your driving licence (if
credit card type) or write an endorsement on it (if paper type).

My understanding is that this does not invalidate your licence for use
in the UK, as only the DVLA can do that.

I wouldn't try any stunt like trying to avoid points by using an
Australian licence in the UK, or vice versa.
