Default Exchanging large ammounts of currency

Hi,

I have no experience of foreign exchange beyond the couple of hundred quid required for a weekend away but at the moment I'm having to think in multiples of 10,000.

Has anyone on the group exchanged large sums of money? What are the costs involved? Are large banks the best bet or are there companies in the city that specialise in these sorts of transactions?

Share your knowledge and experience. If anyone can recommend a reliable cheap way of doing this I'd be grateful. Obviously I'm going to be suitably careful, I'm aware that some shits have taken peoples immigration money and gone into liquidation before transferring it. That idea makes me sick to my stomach.

Hello Rich.

We suggest that Halewood International are worth a call - here's a link to cut and paste into your browser if you are interested:
http://www.hifx.co.uk/register/default.asp?originatorID=GoMatilda

Or call their Private Client Desk on (UK number) 01753 859159.

I believe they maintain a separate Trust Client Account where your money would be retained, which ring fences your money from their own business finances.

Best regards.

Hi Rich

Yes, we used Halewood on the advice of people on this forum and found them excellent.

We rang for a exchange rate when we wanted to transfer, they told us their rate and also said to ring around other places before we committed to make sure we were getting the best deal.

We had no problems whatsoever with Halewood....had problems with the HSBC in the UK, but thats another story

love sophia xx

ps, they hold your money in a seperate client account (which I think is held with Barclays) so even if they did go bust, your money should be safe.

Yes we have used them and found them to be good. Only converted a relatively small amount so far. The exchange rates they give are much better than the banks, which makes a big difference on larger sums.

Hi There!

Like you, i was only used dealing with foreign exchange for 'Holiday beer money' but i opened an account with Commonwealth Bank Australia with their London office. There have been mixed views on using these on this forum, but so far I have found them to be really helpful, and if you are exchanging large amounts as i was , you get a good rate. They will also hold the funds till you tell them to exchange if you want to monitor the currency market yourself. I used www.xe.com and found this useful. A few cents either way, can make a big difference if your not careful!

Hope this helps!

Cheers!
