Hi Dorothy,
I heard that there are only French-speaking primary schools in Montreal, which means if we choose to live in Montreal my daughter has to learn French and not our favorite English. If you have time, pls let me have more information about which city suits my situation best.
Many thanks in advance.

I guess than your choices could be Toronto or Vancouver... all the public schools are in english.

That seems to be quite an unusual view actually.
I'm eligible for citizenship, and have been since May, but I won't do it until I feel that I can honestly say I feel loyalty to Australia. So many people have told me this is daft and I should just do it, because its only words, but that dones't seem right to me personally. Its quiote refreshing to hear someone say that they agree and I should wait until I mean it before going ahead.

I had to do it as when I joined the Department of Immigration, I had only been in Australia a year - so I undertook to become an Australian citizen as soon as I was eligible. It went a bit aginst the grain being Welsh, and I had never had to, swear allegiance to Liz before - but a job's a job.
now you swear allegiance to Australia which would fit in a bit more with my Australian Republican views - so maybe that would have meant a bit more to me - but there was no choice back in them days and it honestly meant absolutely nothing to me.
Of course, my three sons were born in Australia, have only Australian passports (although are british and Irish also) - my eldest even regards himself as Australian, we just returned in time for me to beat it out of the younger two ........

If you can prove that your main language that you speak in your house is english you can have your kids in a english school. Or if you studied in english you can have your kids going to a english school. If not, there is always the possibility to send your kids to private schools
I guess than your choices could be Toronto or Vancouver... all the public schools are in english.

Hi KFP
To maintain the Australian permanent residence past the initial 5 years you need to spend 2 out of 5 years physically in Australia - the 3 out of four would relate to qualifying for Australian citizenship. So yo ucould do the 6 months here and 6 mont hthere lark.
I think Canada will give citizenship after 3 years there so if you got both visas, you coudl validate both and spend 3 years in Canada to get Canadian Citizenship and then go and live in Australia before that visa expired - you would then have to stay in Australia pretty much continuously for at least 2 years and up to 4 to get teh Australian Citizenship.
