The airline can tell you the 'excess baggage' rate. It is 'per kilo'
then ask them who to call about 'unaccompanied baggage' (it would be the
freight department of that airline, or their freight handling agent)
Unaccompanied baggage is air freight, but you get a special half-price
rate if you produce a ticket proving that you are flying the same route.

As a really rough rule of thumb, Unaccompanied baggage is cheaper than
excess baggage when the excess gets to about 10kilos.
(the 'per kilo' rate for freight is cheaper, but you have to pay 'fixed
price' paperwork fees)
Haven't done it from the UK for years upon years, but last time I got
hit, excess baggage rate to Oz was 15 quid, and unaccompanied was
something like 5 (per kilo).

Quick pros and cons-
Excess baggage travels on the same flight, you collect it and clear
customs- easy.

Unaccompanied baggage must usually be lodged with freight department,
travels later, and you must collect from the freight department. (of
course, if you lodge the freight a couple of days before you travel, it
might be there ready to collect when you arrive).

IIRC, there used to be a desk at Heathrow that did unaccompanied baggage
on the spot for travellers not wanting to pay excess charges, and happy
for their bags to arrive later. Can't remember what they were called.

If I book a ticket with Malaysia Airlines or Qantas using this
site, can I then call the airline and get the 40kg allowance ?

Hi,

I cheacked into this already for me and hubby only Qantas Ba will give you free the extra baggage allowance if you confirm that it is a one way and for migration, when you book I think you get 45 kg.

I got a quote

Edin - Fiji - Christchurch - Brisbane £650 each. As we are travelling abit first. That was with Trailfinders.

They specially advertise one way fares so perhaps they know about any extra baggage allowance available.

No true, several airlines give the allowance including Singapore.
Malaysia have recently suspended the extra baggage allowance, but as
I've said before, if you're shipping stuff as well, what's the point
of carrying extra weight when you can stick it in the container?

So we can take xtra stuff for our one year old. Travel cot, Toys etc etc. 3 - 4 months in a container is a long time to do without.

You say just yourself and husband can get the extra luggage allowance - what about if you have to pay adult fares for children - can they then have extra luggage allowance too.

You get the full 40 kilos allowance wether you pay full or adult fare. Just add it all up. It's a hell of a lot of luggage. We are taking the PS2, loads of toy's and a kettle and toaster(don't ask!!) Also I'm a paintsprayer by trade so I'm gonna take my sprayguns and full air fed mask in the hope I get a job before our stuff arrives. Th eproblem I've got is on an xray machine my sprayguns will look like real guns with triggers and the lot!! and "why are you carrying an air mask sir?" Might take some explaining.

I want to travel relatively light. No containers. Maybe a smallish
airfreight box, but not much really.

I got a rough estimate of £200 for a 40kg box from one removal company
to send it separately by air.

Dunno which option I'm going to take yet. I should probably start
weighing the stuff I want to take with me.

I'm torn between Qantas and their 40kg or Malaysian and there's
quicker flight to Adelaide (one stop instead of Qantas' two).

I should also stop typing after drinking South Australian wines, my
head's spinning.

We flew with Singapore Airlines and I had to fax them our visas before they would confirm the baggage allowance.
We were allowed 40kgs each for me and my husband and only 10kgs for our son who flew on an infant fair.
We struggled to keep our baggage within this especially with the travel cot taking up our sons allowance. In the end we repacked about 5 times and had to completely eliminate one case!!! (Just meant I had to do lot of shopping when we arrived!!!!!!!!!!!!)

I have flown with some weird stuff in my luggage before - when you check in
tell them and they can take you and your luggage to a room and check the
contents - they then mark the cases as security cleared and this will
prevent some dirty baggage handler breaking the locks and rifling through
your stuff further down the line .
