Default Does baby need an Aus or UK passport?

Hi guys,

Hopefully someone can clarify this for me.

Our daughter is an Australian/UK citizen and lives in the UK with her partner who is a UK citizen. They are having a baby early next year. For them to come to Aus on holiday could the baby travel on a UK passport or would they need to get him/her an Australian one?

Regards,
Ellie

Baby doesn’t need an Australian passport to come on holiday but would need a visa if travelling on a British passport. In the long run it would be better for the parents to apply for his/her Australian citizenship and passport.

Thank you BritInParis. Yes definitely in the long run they will no doubt arrange that but just for the holiday it's good to know that it's not necessary.

Ellie

Surely if the mother is an Australian citizen, then the child will be a citizen from birth, and will NEED an Australian passport, as all Australian citizens must enter and leave Australia on an Australian passport. Leo, the child would not qualify for a visa as an Australian citizen.

I apologise if this is incorrect and am happy to be corrected.

isn't automatically an Australian citizen - the child needs to be registered at the High Commission, then they are a citizen. Unless they are registered they can be tourists but yes, they can certainly be registered as a citizen by descent.

As mentioned children born abroad to Australian citizens are not Australian citizens themselves until they are registered as such. Until registered as an Australian citizen by descent the child can travel to Australia on a foreign passport providing the correct visa is in place.
