As with a lot of potential migrants, i'm agonising about leaving a parent behind.
i'm going to be going over on a 457 visa early next year, how do you go about proving a parent is a 'dependant' in order to be included on this visa (or is it possible)?
any help/advise is appreciated

Bringing a dependent parent is really only an option for people from developing nations. If you are from the UK, the existence of the welfare state would make it nigh on impossible to show a parent's dependency.

Thanks for the reply, although she is over here, she is south African and therefore doesn't qualify for benefits

She has some savings but no income and is living with us, she managed to sneak into the UK under a lorry travelling from Calais...
...just kidding, she's here on an ancestral visa so doesn't qualify for state benefits

So no help with the original question then

What help do you want? You've already been told that bringing a parent from UK as a dependant is nearly impossible and considering she is on a visa which requires her to work DIAC will expect that she is capable of working and deny her. You will be asked to remove her from your application, so the blunt answer is NO. You cannot bring your mother.

You could try consulting a registered agent. No-one here is going to really be able to help you, especially as it appears that the visa your mother is on would debar her from being classed as a dependent. A professional "might"be able to find a solution but I have to admit it seems unlikely.

Thank you polyanna for your reply.
Thank you Dorothy for what I assume you thought was a helpful reply but was more of a bitter rant.
I have got some very well informed and helpful advice from another source so if anyone is in the same boat, pm me and I'll point you in the right direction.
