Hi,
I am about to write a defacto statement describing my relationship with my partner
for purposes of migration. Is there a standard format for this document? Or do I just
compose it like a letter? How long does it need to be?
Thanks in advance, Martin

I prepared a six page document in chronological order.
Under each event I gave a summary of what occured on that date. There is no standard format, just write more than less
to add credence to your application.

Hi,
Did you include any bank statements or other "proof"?
Also, did you have to get 2 other people to do separate defactos?
Thanks, Martin

My de facto and I both wrote (using a computer) a page or 2 of a history or our relationship including what we were planning on doing together in the future etc. We attached the pages to a form (sorry I can't remember the name of it, but it can be found on the immigration website), and declared that the attached was true ya de ya and signed it (and the attached sheets) in front of a policeman.
With our 2 folders which we submitted we included:
*joint bank account statements with notes next to certain purchases (eg. anniversary dinner, outdoor furniture, accomodation for Easter break etc.)
*photos of us together,
*many emails between ourselves and also between us and our friends/family,
*invitations sent to the both of us,
*electricity bills in our names
*4 form 888s (by each of my boyfriend's parents and 2 of our friends)
*phone bills with each other's number highlighted
*copy of our lease
*a copy of our gym membership details
the list goes on! Anything which proves you are in a 'genuine and continuing relationship' and have been for over 12 months is worth putting in.
Hope that helps.
Nara
P.S. I got my visa in November '01.

Hi Nara,
What's with the signing in front of a policeman bit?! Never heard of that! Also our
agent never mentioned a form. Oh well!

Hello,
I'm applying for independant residency and my defacto will be on my application (her skills will not be included), will I have to write a long letter to explain our ralationship ? I didn't see this on the application form anywhere.
Cheers,
Dave.

Maybe it's not necessary to have the declaration certified, but we did.
I suppose it could probably just be signed in front of the person interviewing you, but I think that if you hand over the forms before the interview it may be required.
Here's the form we used: http://www.immi.gov.au/allforms/statdec.htm
