Database Administrator + Software Engineer
 

Hello all,

I am Oracle DBA with over 4 years of experience.

Banking Experience: Oracle Database Administrator Sep 2007 to Sep 2010
Education Experience: Oracle Database Administrator and Developer Sep 2010 to till date.

In education industry, I am working as Database Administrator(Oracle DBA) and Software Engineer (Oracle Developer).

How are new rules affecting oracle DBAs ? I can not find Database Administrator in SOL.

How will you guide me ?

DBA is in SOL schedule 2. You need state sponsorship (176 visa). Or you can wait until you have enough experience as Software Engineer.

I dont know about the new rules, but I can tell you that finding work in Oz is going to get a shedload tougher. I just had lunch with a bunch of project managers who all now work for the big banks, and it sounds like they are outsourcing pretty much all database work to India and the Phillipines next year. There is a freeze on taking on new people and most contracts are bring terminated either before Christmas or early next year.

Partly this has been in the pipeline for some time, and partly this is a panic response to the forthcoming banking crisis.

Surviving in IT industry is very tough. There is always outsourcing to India, Philippines, etc. :(

I heard Macquarie, CBA and Westpac are about to outsource pretty much all data operations to India to cut costs. I'm glad I got out of it.... :(

I have checked Victoria State sponsorship list, and I can find Database Administrator in the State Sponsorship List, updated on 30 November 2011.

What should I do now. Can I apply as Oracle Database Administrator ??

Dear Sir,
I have checked at seek.com.au and I can see plenty of jobs in IT, One more thing sir, there are many industries (except banking), and banking industry is crisis in many parts of the world.

Sir I want to live in Australia :))

If there is always outsourcing to India then why Indians are applying for Australian Immigration. ?? :))

Start from here and see if you qualify for skilled immigration or not. If you do, you would need to get your qualifications/experience get recognized from ACS (Australian Computer Society). After that, you may want to get sponsorship from the state you are interested in. This is to point you in right direction. Google is your friend!

I have worked in BI for 12 years as a contractor. I don't think I have ever picked a job up from Seek. Many of the adverts are "fishing expeditions" so that new recruitment consultants build up a portfolio of contractors. Banking and insurance are by far the biggest employers of database specialists In Australia - probably about 60% of the market at a guess.

As I said - I don't want to appear negative, but please don't thing it's easy here. I know this market VERY well, and it's always been tough, and it's getting much tougher. Shades of the dot con bubble again, when DBAs were stacking shelves in supermarkets.

God luck with it mate, but plan on driving a taxi for a living.... :(

Skilled Occupation List (SOL) 2011 – Schedule 1 and 2


Should I apply to ACS to get my skills and education recognized ?? Can not I apply for State Sponsorhip directly ??

Its a must. Either before or during the sponsorship process, you have to submit it.

Yeah, I know its tough there, my younger brother is in australia for studies, and tell me that its not that easy there.

Dot com bubble again ?? dont tell me .
