I was just wondering if any citizens by descent have claimed citizenship by descent for their foreign born children and, if so, what documentation did they provide to demonstrate residence in Aus before the child was born? My UK born son moved to Aus at 6months (his father is Australian hence his by descent status) and lived there continuously until about 24. Now his son has been born in UK and it makes sense for him to register our grandson as a citizen by descent. Just need to know what documentation might be required. Thanks!

Normally you won't need to provide anything. DIBP can electronically access your son's movements in and out of Australia for roughly the last 30 years or so. If they do need something your son would need to approach the National Archives of Australia and ask for his older movement records which are still stored on microfiche. However they should only ask for it if they need it. If your son holds British citizenship because was born in the UK though he should also provide his full British birth certificate in addition to his son's.

You can apply online or by paper. The online system is new and suffering from teething problems so applying on paper is often easier.
